"Isn't this marvelous?" Vlad exclaimed. "I turn Dani, and end up with a full blood and half blood ghost! I daresay this will greatly expand my experiment range."
Gage and Danny sat tied back to back, glowing green ropes binding them so tightly they could hardly move. Dani stood quietly behind Vlad, watching the scene with a serene indifference.
"I'm torn," Vlad said, pacing back and forth. "I could see if the same techniques work for Danny, but I fear that if I try for immediate results, I might cause too much damage."
"I'll cause damage to your face!" Danny retorted.
"On the other hand," Vlad continued, crouching in front of Gage, "A full ghost is a challenge I haven't yet tested. Would you be more or less susceptible I wonder?" His blue eyes were full of cold humor.
Gage forced himself to hold eye contact. He couldn't die. He had no need to fear. But his body disagreed. Every inch of him longed to shiver, to shy away.
"Dani, what are you doing?" Danny hissed. "He's using you! He's using all of us!"
Dani cocked her head. Her glowing green eyes were vague as she replied, "You're wrong. I've never been more free."
"Quite right my dear," Vlad smirked. "With the Fentons you were only ever a replacement. A burden. With me, you are special! My perfect soldier."
"I am a perfect soldier," Dani repeated blankly.
Gage felt Danny stiffen behind him.
"Dani! You were never a burden to us! I've never seen mom and dad happier than when you decided to live with us. We... We love you!"
"I don't know what love is," Dani replied, a tiny expression of anger sparking behind her eyes. For a fraction of a second, she almost looked like herself again. But it was gone a moment later.
"And I think I've made up my mind," Vlad announced. "There's no shortage of ghosts. If I break this one, it will be no loss. Danny my boy, you can be my final product. Dani's counterpart. The perfect weapons."
He stood and clicked his fingers. Dani closed her eyes and raised her hands. Danny and Gage froze, suspended in a cloud of ecto energy. Vlad stepped in and untied Gage, hooking him up to the machine. Unable to move, unable to speak, all Gage could to was stare helplessly at Dani.
He didn't know if ghosts could die. But there were worse things.
