"Don't say anything," Dani whispered as they walked out of the house together. Gage looked at her questioningly, but Dani shook her head.
They had passed a few minutes of painful conversation in the house. Mr. Fenton had been downright hostile, while Mrs. Fenton had asked an alarming amount of questions. They finally managed to worm away by Dani saying,
"We'd better get going. Gage has to study for a test before visiting the elderly. You know how it is..."
Now they walked down the sidewalk together. Gage remained obediently silent. The weight of their last meeting was still there, but somehow it didn't change things. They walked in a silence of unspoken truths.
Finally, Dani pulled him into a side ally and said loudly,
"Danny, I know you're following us. Give it up."
Danny materialized overhead, looking sulky.
"Ah come on! What gave it away?"
Dani folded her arms, ignoring Gage's look of complete bewilderment.
"Well first off, dad looked about ready to jump in the R.V. and follow two feet behind us. But barring that, the next option is to recruit you to spy. Not very sneaky tactics if I do say so myself."
"Uh, quick question," Gage interjected, raising his hand. "Do we all know that whole... um... backgrounds of each other?"
Danny rolled his eyes.
"Dude, you can't just walk up to a ghost hunter's house and not expect some alarms to go off. You're just lucky I turned off the ecto alarm before my dad went guns crazy."
"Yep," Gage agreed.
"So, now that we're all clear on identities and such," Dani said. "Will you just go on patrolling as normal? This isn't some Johnny 13 thing. It's fine."
Danny sized up Gage.
"You're just going to the Nasty Burger?" he said suspiciously.
"Yeah."
"Home before nine?" he persisted.
"Scout's honor," Gage promised, giving the little salute. Danny hesitated, then finally nodded and soared away.
"You're a boy scout?" Dani laughed. Gage pretended to look offended.
"Hey! I thought I'd proven to be a respectable, undead citizen by this point. Can't a guy get a little credit here?"
