"Is something wrong Dani? You haven't even bragged about the points you made up!" Danny said, holding up the notepad they used to keep score.
Dani shrugged, pushing her spoon dully through the soggy cereal in front of her. Danny looked at her thoughtfully for a moment, then it seemed to come to him.
"Is this about the dance?" he asked, looking suddenly suspicious.
Dani laughed and shook her head.
"Because those guys are idiots if they don't ask you," Danny pressed. "If you want, I could find somebody for you to go with."
"The day I ask for your dating advice will truly be the end times," Dani said. "I promise, I don't care about the dumb school dance. Getting into one of those flouncy neon nightmares called dresses? No thank you."
Danny shrugged, shoveling cereal into his mouth.
"Well when you finally decide to tell me what's going on, I'm ready to listen."
Dani smiled hollowly and went back to pushing her cereal much around the bowl. They both knew it wouldn't happen. Dani kept things to herself. If she was going through a hard time, she'd smile through it until it passed. And no one would ever know something had been wrong.

Dani phased through the basement ceiling, aching, exhausted, but triumphant. Technus had been raiding a used car dealership after hours, and she had just performed one of the quickest captures in her lifetime.
"I am Technus!" the thermos protested. "And I will rule this world with a fist of technology. All will-"
"Yeah yeah," Dani muttered, emptying the thermos into the ghost zone. "Don't you ever get tired of hearing yourself talk?"
The doorbell rang upstairs. From the sound of the heavy footsteps racing towards it, Dani gathered that Mr. Fenton was answering the door. She yawned, and grabbed a rag to clean out the thermos she had just used.
"Dani! The door's for you!" Mr. Fenton bellowed a moment later. Dani sighed and got up. This had better not be another dress session with Becca. She stepped into the living room and saw Mr. Fenton looking distrustfully at the door, arms folded. That could only mean... a boy.
She looked tentatively past Mr. Fenton's massive orange figure.
Gage stood nervously on the doorstep, hands held defensively in his hoodie pocket. His face broke into a smile when he saw Dani though.
She felt herself return it without even thinking.
