Chapter 6: Portal

[Tessa's POV]

Tessa: "He was headed to Québec, I'm guessing because he knows some other French people he could stay with, or maybe he was wanted to be among his own culture. Either way, he never made it that far. He was planning on stowing away on a cargo ship, but was stopped. He must have gotten caught. I tried searching for a name, for a city, anything, but there was nothing. I don't know what else to tell you, I'm sorry that is all I know."

I moved away from Gary, away from the rest of group. There was nothing more I could tell them. I was physically exhausted from the shift, and mentally exhausted from my strange dream. I let my mind clear, trying to relax as my head began pounding and throbbing. Was there something I was forgetting?

[Magnus's POV]

I was standing off to the side as this was no longer my business. The moment Tessa had announced the name of the man she had shifted into I began to wonder. It is not simply a coincidence that they have the same last name. Shadowhunters do not do that. If you have a last name it is because you belong to that family. No two shadowhunter families ever happen upon the same surname by chance. They are not mundanes.

I wonder what happened between them? What had caused one to run off with the possessions of the other? There was something more to the story than was being told, important details left out of the conversations. Did he honestly think we would not find them out?

[Jem's POV]

Jem: "I know I may not be in any position to question you Gary, but was he, Winston I mean, related to you? Is there something you are not telling us?"

Gary: "It is none of your business what our relations are, it only matters that you find him immediately!" he said raising his voice to a volume that made it echo throughout the open room.

Jem: "I did not mean to offend you -"

Gary: "And who are you to question me anyways?" he said cutting me off mid-sentence, "How old are you even? Twenty at the most I'd say, and you think you can lip me off that that! I think not!"

[Author's POV]

Without warning Gary started attacking James. He reached into his belt pulling out a knife and started lunging for him with the strength and agility that only came from years of training. Jem did not know what to do. He had not come expecting a fight, but did his best to dodge Gary's swipes. Within mere seconds James had been struck his side. As the blood began to pool around his newly open wound, he began to feel faint and could barely hold himself up right. Tessa had run off, she was searching for a weapon nearby, anything thatwould help. She bolted to where she had set down her bags, on the other side of the room and rummaged through until she found Jem's blades. Running back to the action she dove at Gary's back striking him just enough to make him freeze, but not enough to kill. Jem then took that opportunity to get ontop of Gary and pin him down. They did not want to kill him but if it came down to saving themselves or killing him, he would not walk away with his live.

[Tessa's POV]

I looked at my hand, it was covered in blood. As I pulled back my blade from Gary's back, he collapsed to the floor and Jem pushed himself up ontop of Gary pinning him in place. Looking to my side, I could see the familiar blue sparks meaning Magnus was at work. I hope he was opening a portal, if Gary would not reason with us that may be our only option for escape.

Tessa: "What should we do?"

I was looking directly at Jem, as I always looked to him during situation such as these.

Jem: "I say we wait a little while longer, see what he has to say. The more information we can get out of him the better."

***10 Minutes Later***

We had Gary bound to a chair in his own home, what a turn of events. I wonder where the man who had led us to this room when we arrived had gone to? I wonder if he wished we would indeed kill Gary? If he always acts as he did so just recently, I would not blame that man for wanting him dead.

Tessa: "He has still not woken up, what should we do?"

Jem: "I say we leave him here and go find Winston. Not for this beast's sake," he said nodding towardy Gary, "but for Winston's. I do not believe for one second that Gary is as innocent as he would like us to believe. Actually I am certain he is not as innocent! Look at what he did to my arm!"

Magnus: "The portal is ready, but I can't keep it open forever, I say we go before he can attack again."

Tessa: "Alright, let's go!"
