I sat there just staring at him. I didn't know how to tell him I got into college at Harvard, more than 3,000 miles away. He is my best friend. I never want to leave him.

"What's wrong Sarah?" He snapped me out of my deep thought.

"Um. So I applied for college."

"And?" He said excitedly.

"Well I got the letter saying I got in." I said.

"That's great. I'm so proud of you. Do your parents know? Why are you sad?"

"Yea I guess it's pretty great." I slightly laughed. "Yea, my mom and dad know."

"Are they happy for you?" He furrowed his eyebrows.

"Yea. They are."

"Then what's the matter Sarah. You can tell me anything. You're my best friend remember?"

"I don't want you to be sad or mad."

"Oh my gosh Sarah! Just tell me." He said flailing his arms and getting off of my bed. Clearly he's getting irritated with my beating around the bush.

"Harvard. I got into Harvard." I said just above a whisper.

"What?" He said turning around slowly, running his hand though is thick brown hair. "Harvard? Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"I didn't want you to get mad. I don't want to leave you." I said as tears were forming in my eyes.

He came and sat next to me, putting his hand on my back and rubbing in tiny circles to try and calm me down.

"I would never be mad. Yes, maybe sad but never mad." I laid my head on his shoulder, quietly crying.

"I don't want to leave you."

"Hey, this is what you've been wanting ever since you were 15. This is your dream. I have Sam and everyone here with me anyways."

"Yea, but, I have none of them or you with me when or if I go." I looked up at him.

He cleared his throat. "Correction," he said putting his finger in the air. "that's when you go."

"Oh shut up." I said playfully pushing his chest.

It was silent for a while until he spoke up.

"Isn't Harvard like 3,000 miles away?"

"Over 3,000 miles." I said.

"Oh. Well I'm hungry."

"Ok. Let's go get food then."

We got up and headed for my door. I turned the handle to reveal a eavesdropping Deja listening to our every word.

She looked up at me and smiled.

"Oh there's my quarter. Stupid thing. Oh hey Sarah."

"What the hell Deja!"

"I'm sorry I didn't mean too. I heard you crying so I wanted to make sure you were ok."

"I just want to punch you sometimes." I said clenching my fists. She looked down at my hands and her eyes widened. She got up and ran to her room, closing the door behind her.

Jack was laughing hysterically. I turned and glared at him. He stopped right away.

We walked downstairs and out of the door.

"We're going to get something to eat." I yelled to my dad as the door was closing.

"In-n-out?" I asked.

"Omg yes girl." Jack said in a girly tone.

I laughed and got into my black Mercedes Benz. I dug in my pockets for my keys.

"I'll be right back. I have to get my ke-." I looked over at Jack who was holding my purse. When did he grab that? Oh whatever. "Thanks G. What would I ever do without you?" I smiled at him.

"My exact same question." He smiled back.

I rolled my eyes and took my keys out of my purse and put them into the ignition. I took my phone out of my pocket and plugged the aux cord in.

Been That Way by Bryson Tiller came on. I looked at Jack who was already singing along. Technically it's rapping but whatever. I smiled to myself. He's so cute. In a best friend way, of course.

I put my car into reverse and backed out of the huge driveway. In-n-out wasn't that far. It was about 10 minutes away.

The car ride was silent for the most part. Just the music playing in the background.

We arrived at In-n-out and I drove up to the window. We got our food and headed back to my house.

"Well since you're going to college at the end of the summer, we have to make this summer count." Jack said biting into his burger.

"That sounds great." I said, briefly looking over at him and smiling.

We were back at my house now. My mom was home. She got a job right after we moved. She's my former schools guidance counselor. It was awkward to have your mom work at the high school you went to at first, but I got used to it. It was actually nice because she already knew your problems. I know it's summer but she still has to do some stuff until she has the summer off.

My dad still worked for that company too. He was practically the owner now. He was off today, but you already knew that. He has been going into the office more than usual these days. But that's none of my business.

I parked behind my moms car and we both got out. I opened the door to the house and walked in. Deja was sitting down on the couch watching spongebob. The hash slinging slasher episode.

"Hey Deja. We're home. I got you some In-n-out." I said heading to the counter to put everything down. I went and plopped on the couch, Jack following close behind.

I put my arm around her and looked at her. She looked normal but a little bit scared. "What's wrong?" I asked concerned.

"Mom and Dad are fighting again." She said in a monotone.

"Oh. Everything will be fine. It always does." I said reassuring her.

"No. This is worse."

"Do you know why they're fighting?" I looked down at her.

"Dad has been cheating on mom. That's why he's been spending more time at work."

My eyes widened. I looked over at Jack who was staring at her intently. He looked up at me. We just looked at each other. I took my hand from around Deja and ran it through my hair.

Jack placed his hand on my thigh and squeezed a little. I knew something was wrong when he told us he had to go to work more.

"Hey. Everything will be fine." He whispered in my ear.

"Let's go watch a movie." I suggested, trying to get her mind off of this situation.

"Ok." She said getting up. I walked over to the counter and grabbed her food. I walked back to her and grabbed her hand and squeezed slightly.

"They're going to get through this Deja." I said.

"I hope so."

Omg! Happy New Year. I know I'm late but idc.

They have a fucking movie room bro. I'm so jealous. Ughh.

Poor Deja. 😔
