It was late on May 23. Misa Amane had spent the past half hour sitting in the shadows of the dark, watching the sky. Watching all the beautiful stars and wondering all about the universe.

The park was mostly empty this late in the day, but of course Misa was expecting to meet someone. So, she wasn't all that shocked when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She expected it to be Kira, who she adored and admired so, here to ask her to join them. What she didn't expect was a raspy voice to say, "Aren't you lookin' fine? Come with me, baby, and I won't hurt you."

Misa turned to look at the figure behind her. Probably a man a little younger than 30 with glasses, and long hair stood behind her. "Get away from me, and I won't hurt you." She responded. Her beautiful face was twisted in disgust.

Rem was right near Misa, but would be unable to kill the man, as doing so would kill her too. Already, Rem felt a love for the young woman. Either way, Misa had to handle this on her own.

The man was laughing. "A little girl like you? Don't waste your time, babe." He started to reached for something in his coat pocket, but Misa grabbed his wrist before he could grab the object. She placed her other hand on his forearm, right by his elbow. Then, driving forwards, she flipped him onto his back, while still keeping her grips on him. His head hit the dirt and bounced up. Clearly he hadn't been trained to fight. He couldn't even fall properly. Either way, he hadn't been able to grab whatever had been in his pocket.

Misa crouched down and placed a knee on his stomach, putting her weight on him (which wasn't very much,) so that he wouldn't get up. While doing this, she reached into his pocket and pulled out a small knife with a blade probably only 3 or 4 inches long. "You asshole!" Misa cried out. "You walk around with a knife, hoping to do whatever dirty things you please with an unarmed woman? You're not entitled to anyone else's body! And don't think carrying a weapon changes anything! It just proves what a coward you are." Misa placed the knife into her boot. She got up and took a step back. "Now get out of here. And if you ever harass anyone again, I can promise I will do much more than hurt you like I just did." With that, the disgusting man scurried off.

I believe I've had a change of heart. Misa thought. "This is a mistake." There was suddenly a feeling of enlightenment washing over the woman. "Misa?" Rem stepped beside her. "Rem...." Misa said, eyes focused on the ground. "What just happened... It opened my eyes. It's true... I've dealt with situations like that many times before but it's only now that I realize... Trying to meet and team up with Kira; it's too dangerous. And... I've been using this Death Note so selfishly..." Rem interrupted, "But, Misa... I gave you that Death Note to use for yourself." The fair haired woman shook her head in response.

"The objective I've been trying to use it for is so ludicrous, and I can think of no other reason to use this notebook. So, Rem," There was a pause. Misa raised her head to look the Shinigami in the eyes. "I wish to renounce my ownership of the Death Note." The Shinigami was in dismay. "Misa, perhaps you should think this through-,"

"No. I've made up my mind."

Misa had been carrying a large, black bag with many pockets. Reaching into an opened side pocket, Misa retrieved a note book similar but not the same as the one which the original Kira owned. She placed this book into Rem's pale hands.

Although Rem was astonished, deep down she could feel that Misa was making the right decision. After all, a person haunted by a Shinigami will face nothing but misfortune, so maybe.... Maybe Misa could be happy without Rem.

The Shinigami accepted the book. Then Misa said the words, "I hereby give up ownership of this Death Note." Somewhat pained to be leaving, Rem slowly stepped back. Then, turning, she walked several steps before heading towards the stars up above. By the time she was gone from Misa's sight, Misa could no longer remember her at all.

Thinking she had been at the park simply to watch the stars before being attacked, Misa fixed the strap of her bag on her shoulder, then walked away from the park.

After the girl had departed, Light Yagami stepped from the shadows, a grin on his face. His eyes shone brightly in the moonlight. He seemed pleased with the evening's events. "That's one less problem to deal with." Ryuk was silent behind his human. It was only when Light spoke again that Ryuk froze, somewhat surprised. "I would have felt bad killing an innocent girl."
