Chapter 3

Friday used to be Megan’s favourite day. Now all it brought her was pain and tears. Everyone was so relieved to be going home for the weekend tomorrow to see their family. Megan didn’t have a family. At least, not anymore.

So, instead, she was stuck at Phil’s every weekend. It was a living hell, but better than being on the street.

Exhaling smoke as her dormitory mates walked by, Megan couldn’t help but feel dead inside. No one knew about her secret position as Phil’s call girl, ever since that fateful night five years ago when she’d refused to shoot her first deer. Now she was stuck with it, until she died. She and Rowena had been together for a few months, but Rowena had just moved to Sunbury from her hometown in Ballarat. They used to talk via the internet and phone.

She butted her cigarette and pulled on her bullet sheaths. Megan was a top soldier, expressing her achievements by wearing all the gear she owned: bullet sheaths – complete with bullets – and a belt full of grenades. All the other soldiers in Military Minds were never allowed grenades until they graduated.

The sun was glistening brightly through the grey sky as Megan walked along the gravel to the diner. She found the syncopating rhythm of the gravel crackling and crunching underneath her boots amusing, even though it had been her daily routine for the past five years. It put her mind at ease of the things she would rather not think about, like Phil and his deal.

She was greeted by the appealing smell of bacon when she entered the building. Sitting over at their table was Rowena, tapping the wooden surface with her fingers. As Megan joined her, Rowena stretched up and kissed her passionately.

“How are you feeling?” She smiled.

“Good, actually,” Megan said, meeting her eyes. They were full of the life Megan had known for three months, as usual. “I got a decent sleep last night. Nice change.”

It was then that Rebecca entered the building, and then that Megan felt the weights brought down on her shoulders again. She looked away sharply, attempting to make herself seem engaged in conversation.

A plate of bacon and scrambled eggs was laid out in front of her. Looking up at the waitress, she smiled as a sign of appreciation and dug in.

Rebecca and Millie were assigned to their first task. It involved tagging along with a few seniors to check out another town in Victoria: Stawell. Phil had said there was another armed force there attempting to make the citizens go to war with Military Minds. It was a rather sudden development, and Rebecca had her doubts. She had come to the conclusion that Phil had set them up, and that there was no military force in Stawell.

One of the seniors was Megan. The other two, David and Sam, were her old acquaintances. David was the boy Rebecca had seen talking to Phil the previous day, and Sam had moved from Western Australia last year. They were both immature, making jokes about Rebecca behind her back as she gazed out the train window. Beside her was Millie, listening to her iPod Touch. In front of them was Megan, arms folded and legs folded, gazing out her window at the beautiful sites of country.

Two hours later, the five arrived at Stawell station. As Rebecca stepped foot onto the platform, Megan shoved past her shoulder and almost knocked her off her feet.

The station wasn’t what Rebecca expected. It was an architectural building, looking like it was constructed in the early 90s. She moved through the station’s doors without a word spoken to neither Millie nor Megan. She wouldn’t speak to Megan if she could help it. She didn’t want to be spoken to like dirt again.
