Chapter 12
"Millie!"
Rebecca threw open the door to the dormitory and took a brief glance around. The room was empty. She sighed, and took the liberty of trashing the dormitory for any indications that someone was here.
"Calm the hell down."
Rebecca turned sharply, driving her fist into the person's face, as hard as she could.
Jacinta fell to the floor, groaning, clutching her nose.
"Sorry!" Rebecca fell to her knees and offered Jacinta a tissue. "I thought you were someone else."
"Good one, Hearthrome," she jumped to her feet and shoved her way past Rebecca, pausing at the doorway. "What are you doing here anyway?"
"Rowena has Megan," Rebecca managed to say. Her heart was hammering against her chest, and she felt her legs turn limp like liquorice sticks as she fell back onto the couch, panting.
"That could be bad," Jacinta said. "Very bad."
She drew her iPhone 5 from her pocket and dialled in a number.
Millie picked up. "Dave's sperm bank. You spank it, we bank it."
"Now isn't the bloody time, Barbie doll."
"What's wrong Cint?" Millie asked out of general concern.
"Rowena has Megan," Jacinta said. "You know what that means."
"I'll be right there."
The receiver went dead.
Millie met up with Rebecca and Jacinta just outside the college. She drew from her pocket a stick of lip balm. "Anyone got dry lips?"
"Millie -
"Relax, it's atomic."
Jacinta rolled her eyes, and pushed her back up against the chained fence. Rebecca realized, to her own surprise, that she had the right idea. The trees hanging over the top of the fence allowed them temporary cover. Rebecca stood as still as a statue beside her. The barrel of her rifle was cold against her breast.
She hadn't had the chance to change, so now she had to make do and deal with the tears in her uniform from various explosions. In almost eight hours, her world had changed.
"Once you see Rowena, make some kind of hand gesture." Jacinta said, glancing out to the strip of road which ran along near the green tank. "I'm going to check to see if everyone's okay."
With that, Jacinta dropped to her hands and knees - a standard military procedure, and crawled along the ground into the college.
Rebecca cast a brief glance to her left, where Millie stood looking out over the grounds, her rifle lain against her shoulder. She was an Aussie bogan, Rebecca would give her that much. She wore her cap on the side, but had an intent mask on her face. She knew the college was in danger, and so was Megan.
"Look," Millie murmured, her breath warm on Rebecca's ear. She was pointing to a young male, around eighteen, wearing his brown hair back in a ponytail.
"What?" Rebecca asked, meeting Millie's blue eyes.
"That's Rowena's boyfriend, Brodie." Millie slipped past Rebecca and was walking toward him. Rebecca, in an act of desperation, ran after her and lunged. They both fell to the asphalt with a thud.
Brodie looked up like a dog sensing the presence of an intruder, and pointed the barrel of his rifle to the bushes just in front of them.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed?" Rebecca hissed in her ear. "No interference."
Just as Millie was about to get up, she saw Rowena walking toward Brodie. She stayed still underneath Rebecca, listening intently, trying to focus all of her hearing senses to them.
"He's one of them," Rebecca gasped. She rose from Millie, sitting still in immense shock.
"One of who?" Millie whispered.
Rebecca didn't have time to explain. She rose slowly and cautiously to her feet, and ran. She could hear her footsteps on the asphalt, and tried to calm her heart rate down. She could hear Rowena yelling, and the sound of two pairs of feet hard on the asphalt behind her.
Millie, seeing Rebecca in danger, acted drastically and fired a shot into Brodie's leg. He staggered, and fell to the asphalt, moaning in pain and crying. Rowena turned sharply, and lined up a shot at Millie.
Rebecca lunged onto her, knocking her off guard. The bullet fired into a tree, scaring a possum from the treetop.
It was dark, five past eleven. Rebecca hadn't been trained to fight in these conditions, and she was scared, maybe a little nervous, to carry out with the mission she'd assigned herself to.
She was thrown off from Rowena, and copped the butt of a rifle to the back of her head.
