Chapter 11
There was a pause as Jacinta glanced up at Rebecca, her face emotionless. She placed a hand on Rebecca's shoulder, and murmured, "your dad is dead."
"AGH!"
Rebecca sat up straight in her double bed, panting hard. She was covered in cold sweat, her heart racing a million miles per hour.
"Beccy what's wrong?"
In an instant, Megan was in front of her, her hands like iron clamps on Rebecca's shoulders. Her soft face was a mask of concern.
"Bad dream." she sighed, glancing down to rub her eyes. She felt her hair being drawn back from her face, behind her ear, and following, Megan's arms around her.
"It's okay," Megan whispered in the twilight. "You're going to be okay."
Rebecca found herself crying. She curled up into a ball, only allowing the touch of Megan's gentle hands to unwind her. She lay back on the bed, as Megan lay over her. "You're so beautiful."
Rebecca felt a wave of happiness crash over her. She'd been alone for the 17 years of her life she'd lived and it felt good to be wanted, to be needed, and not merely as a joke. She pulled Megan down by the hair and kissed her passionately.
"Dammit," Megan groaned, sitting up in bed. Her long caramel brown hair fell over her bare breasts. "We have got to stop sleeping with each other." She cast aside a glance to Rebecca, lain on her stomach beside her, fast asleep. Megan sighed, gripping the roots of her fringe. "This girl is going to be the death of me."
Megan slid the thin silk sheets from her lean, tanned body and stood up, cracking her back. She shrugged her shoulders and groaned, leaning her head back. What am I going to do with myself, she thought. I keep doing the opposite of what I want. We've had sex two times in the past week.
"Good morning," Jacinta giggled through the window.
"Pervert," Megan mumbled, groggy with sleep.
"I'm looking for Rebecca."
Megan glanced over her shoulder, to Rebecca, who was snoring. "Sorry, she's dead to the world."
Jacinta grasped the wooden windowsill, and, with a mighty effort, hoisted herself into the dormitory. She held out her hands, to Megan's bewilderment, and pulled Millie through.
"We need to hide here."
"Ever heard of asking first?" Megan asked rhetorically in an exasperated tone.
"Ever since Mr Gold informed the government that Phil got killed, the school has cracked down on its security." Millie said, shrugging off her jacket.
"So you're implying I'm stuck with two girly girls?" Megan asked, folding her arms across her chest. "Oh joy."
"Millie!"
Megan dodged aside as Rebecca came bolting into the room, throwing herself at Millie.
"Do me a favor yeah?" Megan asked, her eyebrows raising. "Don't steal my girlfriend."
"You two are together?" Jacinta asked, looking from Megan to Rebecca. "Aww! That's so -
"Don't say it," Megan said through clenched teeth. "Your version of puppies and make up and handbags is my interpretation of bombs and grenades and death."
"Guys," Rebecca said.
At first Megan didn't know what Rebecca was trying to say, until she looked up and followed her gaze. A blinding white light shone through the dormitory window. The buzzing of a chopper was deafening in their ears. It was like a hornet, closing in on them. She took her rifle from against the wall and fired a bullet at the light. It went dull. Feeling a sense of accomplishment, she lowered the rifle to her stomach.
