Chapter 5

Glenn was doing better than the last time Rebecca had seen him. She was astounded how quickly he'd recovered over three and a half days. His straightened black hair was spread out over his forearms. Usually he wore it out in curls, but Rebecca thought he looked more attractive with it straight.

The only items of clothing he wore were dark grey jeans and white and blue striped bed socks. He wasn't extremely muscular, but his fair skin showed no traces of fat or hair. He was slim. Rebecca thought he was in his early twenties, even though he was thirty-eight.

"How's school going?" Glenn asked. He was putting together one of his famous wraps Rebecca loved: lettuce, mayonnaise, and ham enclosed in Pita bread.

"Fine," Rebecca shrugged, stirring her hot chocolate slowly. She wore a thin layered black long-sleeved top over her white t-shirt and skin tight black jeans.

"Have you made any friends?"

"A few," she sighed, thinking of Megan's cold ways. "Millie, Rowena and Jacinta. They're all juniors I share a dormitory with."

Their house was on Jackson's Hill near Sunbury Primary School and Sunbury's university campus. It was one of the newly built houses. A road ran down the two lines of houses in a straight line, until it reached a round-about down near Barkly Street. The area was known for the extravagant structures, which housed wealthy families.

Rebecca had taken all of their money for granted before her mother had passed away, but now she appreciated it more than ever.

"Got a boyfriend yet?" Glenn asked. He pulled out a chair across from Rebecca and seated himself, sliding a wrap across to her.

"No," she said indifferently, "but what would you say if I thought I was bi?"

Glenn paused as he was about to take a bite out of his wrap. His eyes traced Rebecca cautiously, curiously. Within the ice blue irises she could see the uncertainty dawning.

"They're your feelings, sweetheart," Glenn said. "No one has the right to judge you for what you are. If you have a girlfriend instead of a boyfriend, so be it."

For the first time in two days, Rebecca smiled. She felt the sides of her face broaden, yet she felt no desire to hide it from Glenn.

And, in exchange, Glenn smiled. It made his features soften. Rebecca could see the tenderness in her father, and was reminded of why Melanie had married him.

"You should find yourself a girlfriend," Rebecca said, changing the topic. "After about a year. I know it's not easy moving on after being with someone for so long."

He rose from the table, plate in one hand and wrap in the other. Slowly, he took another bite and walked back to the sink.

"Perhaps." Glenn shrugged. Rebecca had always found herself interested in the way Glenn's prominent shoulder blades curved. She thought he could have any girl he wanted.

Rebecca was surprised to find Megan waiting for her in the car park on Monday. She was leaning back against a black Ford XR6, which Rebecca assumed was her car. Rebecca's car was a white Holden Echo, a hatchback. Technically, it was her father's car. She was still on her L plates.

When Rebecca hauled herself from her car, Megan straightened up. Her dark camouflage uniform was freshly washed, as was Rebecca's.

"I thought you told me never to talk to you again," Rebecca said dryly, brushing past Megan.

She trotted up beside her. "Look," she breathed, "I've had a bad past. If I knew you well, I'd tell you right now. But for now, let's just leave it at that. I want to get to know you, Hearthrome."
