Chapter 7
The following day was peaceful, for a change. Rebecca was about to get changed into her uniform, when a series of loud knocks sounded from the door.
She approached it slowly, expecting to see either Sam or Phil.
Instead, when she pulled on the round brass knob, she found herself face-to-face with Megan. She wasn’t in her uniform.
Instead, she wore a sleeveless white t-shirt saying ‘Save the Future’ and golden leggings underneath her black shorts.
“We’re skipping classes today,” she said, tucking a strip of her hair behind her ear. “Unless you want to be a goody-two-shoes.”
Rebecca smiled at her, but wiped it from her face when she thought back to finding Megan alone and crying.
She hastily slipped into her black Def Leppard hooded sweatshirt and joined Megan out in the broad daylight. Everyone around them was moving off to their assigned classes, while Rebecca followed Megan around the buildings.
Eventually, they reached a lake near the back of the school. It was situated half a k away, and had a glistening clear surface. As Rebecca neared the lake, she could see the small fish swimming within the water.
“What’s the special occasion?” Rebecca asked, glancing up at Megan. She was poking a long stick into the water, presumably playing with the dirt.
“I just thought we could get to know each other better,” Megan shrugged, throwing the stick into the water. “You’re unlike the other juniors I’ve met; you actually give a shit.”
Rebecca felt a smile creep across her face as she gazed after Megan, elegantly walking around the lake’s circumference while glancing down into the water. Rebecca began to follow her movements.
“I was born that way,” Rebecca said bluntly. “Does Phil always cut you like that?”
Suddenly, Megan ran to Rebecca and covered her mouth with her hand. After taking two quick glances on either side of herself, Megan pulled her hand off and shot Rebecca a look that suggested she stay quiet.
“Five years ago,” Megan sighed, sitting on the lake’s edge, “I came to a school called Military Minds College. On my second week, I back answered Phil. He wouldn’t give me more bullets after I’d wasted my magazine shooting the targets, and wanted to shoot more. So,” she paused, glancing down at her bare feet dipped into the water, “I called him a bastard. Ever since, I’ve been his call girl. It was either that or get expelled from Military Minds. Everyone else would have chosen the most obvious reason. But I, however, am a soldier by heart.”
Rebecca couldn’t believe what she was hearing. So many thoughts were running through her head, questioning why Phil had to do that. Why did he have to make her his call girl, why did he cut her, but most importantly, how many others that back chatted him was he having sex with?
Rebecca sat next to Megan. Their eyes met briefly, before Megan glanced away and breathed a sigh. “Say what you will,” she said emotionlessly, “just don’t tell anyone, Hearthrome.”
“Why don’t you tell anyone?” Rebecca asked. “You can’t let him get away with this, Megan. He’s a paedophile. And without consent, it’s –
“You think I don’t know what it is?” Megan snapped. She stood from Rebecca, her fists clenched tightly by her sides. “You just don’t understand! If I tell someone, he’ll know and I’ll get expelled. I’d rather be a top soldier than be dead!”
Rebecca, standing to her feet quickly, reached out a hand to reassure Megan.
After about a minute, she dropped her shoulders and took Rebecca’s hand. The tension was gone from her face, and Rebecca sensed she didn’t want to waste anymore time yelling at her.
