Chapter 6
The following morning, Megan awoke to find Phil standing above her. As she sat up, she became aware that this occasion was not for sex. For once, his face was dead serious. And for two, she could vaguely make out the screams of horror coming from outside.
“We’ve been bombed,” Phil said. His tone was firm, and quite frankly, scared the hell out of Megan. “Two air raids in one hour. I’m surprised you slept through that.”
Megan scrambled to her feet, throwing the sheets from her half-naked body. She was only wearing her pink and black bra and yellow pyjama pants with the penguins on them. Hastily, she took the long-sleeved grey and black striped top from the end of her bed and pulled it on herself.
“Do you know who did it?” She asked.
Phil’s green eyes stared at her for a few moments, before he turned and walked out of the dormitory. Megan half-ran after him, and instantly halted in her tracks.
A hole the size of a massive upside-down bowl occupied the juniors’ shooting area. Junior and middle ranks frantically ran around calling things to one another, but to Megan it sounded like a group of headless chooks.
Rebecca, catching Megan in her sight, ran over to her. Megan wasted no time stopping to ask what had happened. She charged head-on into the chaos and tore apart Rowena and Kane, who were about to shoot each other because their fight had gotten out of hand.
She tucked the shot gun into a vacant spot in her belt, where her grenade from David used to be.
“Bloody hell,” she growled, “kill the air raiders, not each other.”
They both shot Megan a cold look, but she was too worried about the safety of Military Minds to care.
She turned back around, frantically searching for Phil amongst the running students. He was over by the main building, whispering something into the juniors’ shooting teacher’s ear. His name was Daniel Toner, and he was the only remaining grandson of a World War Two veteran.
“Phil!” Megan called out.
He took one glance at her and jogged away, behind the building.
Sighing, Megan decided to keep close to Rebecca in case worst came to worst and one of them died.
Together, they set through the school to look for Phil. Megan had explained that it was their first priority, because he was the headmaster and he was meant to be helping his students to safety.
“There he is!” Rebecca pointed out, shaking Megan’s arm to alert her.
They ran towards Phil, who was pointing his SG 550 at the sky.
“You’re supposed to be leading us all to safety,” Megan said, out of breath. She leaned her hands forward onto her knees and tried to catch her breath.
“It was only a temporary bombing,” Phil said emotionlessly, almost as if he was telling them the score for football. “I don’t know who they were, but if they return we’re dead. At the moment, we’re all on lockdown.”
He brushed past them lightly and prepared himself to address the student body. Megan took Rebecca’s hand, and led her behind the dining building. When she was certain they were alone, she leaned forward into Rebecca’s ear.
“If worst comes to worst,” she whispered, “stay with me at all times. I promise I’ll protect you, no matter what.”
Rebecca was clearly astounded. She stood staring at Megan when she straightened up.
It was a moment or so before she spoke. “You’re acting like you love me,” she said, pulling her eyebrows together. “Do you?”
“Pfft, no,” Megan snorted. “We’re friends, aren’t we? Friends look out for each other.”
She took off through the chaos once more, before Rebecca could reply.
Students were panicking and crying. None of them appeared to acknowledge Phil’s booming voice over the noise. Megan chose not to, at least, until he managed to get a tight grip around her arm and haul her back with him toward the tent.
No, Megan thought to herself. I’m not going through this again.
“Rebecca!” She called out, hoping desperately that she would hear her. But she didn’t come, and Phil threw Megan to the ground inside his tent.
“No one’s going to help you this time,” Phil smirked down at her. “After this, hopefully you’ll learn your lesson that you cannot escape me.”

After the student body had calmed down, and finally listened to Phil’s announcement, Rebecca and Millie set out to their dormitory.
Jacinta had officially become Rowena’s shadow; following her everywhere and obeying every order Rowena threw at her. Rebecca didn’t mind, just as long as Millie never chose to follow in her footsteps.
Rebecca lay staring up at the dormitory ceiling for three hours. Frantic thoughts of Glenn’s and Megan’s safety constantly crossed her mind, like an express train.
She begged for sleep to come, to sweep her into its soft embrace. But every time she closed her eyes, the smallest things distracted her: Millie’s tossing and turning in her deep state of sleep, the tree’s thin branches outside scraping across the window pane, and someone shooting outside. In the end she decided to go for a night walk, and slipped off the edge of her bunk into her rabbit slippers.
As she walked along the stretching corridor, to her locker, she noticed a dark figure slouched against the locker beside hers. It was only when Rebecca ran closer that she noticed it was Megan. She had her head in her hands, sobbing.
Rebecca knelt beside her and put an arm around her, rubbing her back gently.
Megan glanced up sharply, but relaxed when she saw Rebecca’s face staring back at her. She leant against Rebecca willingly, as the tears continued to stream down her face.
“What happened?” Rebecca asked.
“H-h-h-he…” Megan sobbed, choking back tears. “He cut me.”
Before Rebecca could ask who, Megan straightened up against the cold metal and rolled up the sleeve of her striped jumper. A crimson ribbon of blood lined her arm. Only then did Rebecca realise it was a deep cut, caused by a dagger.
“Who cut you?” Rebecca asked, rocking Megan in her arms. As she sobbed into Rebecca’s chest, Rebecca became desperate for an answer. “Megan, who cut you?”
“Phil.” Megan sobbed.
