Chapter 14
“Kelly!” Millie came bounding over to her, rifle slung across her back in its sheath. “What’s wrong?”
Kelly snapped herself out of the spell the map seemed to have over her, and held it up for Millie to see. “They’re going to blow up Sunbury.”
Millie froze as her ice blue eyes traced over the worn paper.
Kelly knew that look – helplessness. She herself didn’t know how they were going to stop the Stawell campus from succeeding with their plan. There were twenty bombs situated around the whole town and in major landmarks too: Killara, Gap Road, Mitchell’s Lane, and Macedon Road. At this rate, they’d die trying to stop them from going off.
“We have to get help,” Millie was about to walk away, when Kelly grasped her forearm.
“No, we have to do this ourselves. They have more than half of our campus locked up in there.”
Millie’s shoulders dropped for a moment, but her eyes lit up with an idea. “What about Phil, the sergeant? He could –
“Millie, he’s dead,” Kelly said firmly. Her brown eyes were intent on Millie’s. “Someone already shot him dead, I just don’t know who.”
Kelly released her, casting an idle gaze across the road to where she could see soldiers from Stawell campus trudging through the tall yellow grass, laughing to each other over stupid jokes. “Come on,” she turned toward the hideout and stepped carefully over the body of the soldier she’d knocked out. “Before it’s too late.”
Millie and Jacinta kept close to Kelly as she walked silently through the hideout. She had to hand it to Rowena – the structure was firm, almost indestructible. She doubted in her mind that they’d be able to take it down.
After a while, the blue stone walls, floors and ceilings became an old sight to see, and she wished she could throw a bucket of paint at them. But her patience rewarded her.
She heard Rebecca cough.
“Rebecca?” Millie called into the darkness. Her own voice ricocheted off the walls.
Kelly clasped her hand over Millie’s mouth.
“Shhh!” she hissed into her ear, before releasing her. “We don’t know if any soldiers are around here.”
“You’re the ones who shouldn’t be here.”
Kelly turned sharply. She found herself face-to-face with Niall Canning.
He’d bulked up last since the photo she’d seen was taken. He was definitely military material, wearing only a navy blue tank top to conceal his bulging muscular torso. He had thick, strong arms in which the veins were prominent, and in his hand he held a shot gun.
Millie cocked her rifle at him. “Back off.”
Niall smirked. In the darkness, his tanned face was shadowed, making him scarier than he already was. “Hello princess. Aren’t you a little too young to be holding a gun?”
Millie punched him in the face.
Niall staggered, holding his bleeding nose. He glanced up at Millie with hostility, and stalked toward her raising the gun.
Jacinta stood in front of her, pointing the barrel of her rifle into his chest. “Try it.”
Niall backed off slightly. Kelly could see the anger flashing in his eyes like hazards. He simply smirked, and pulled out a walkie talkie.
“Back up needed in section five, over.”
Suddenly, a swarm of soldiers filled the narrow corridor, surrounding the three girls with their rifles aimed at them. Kelly counted ten, all dressed in the light camouflage uniforms, but only five were male. Unlike Military Minds, they had modern-looking weapons. Kelly recognised automatic rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers and carbines.
