Chapter 17
"We need back up!" Kelly shouted into her walkie talkie as she bounded across the field, swerving in and out of the fighting soldiers.
She stumbled to the ground as the ground shook violently beneath her. Another land mine.
"Kelly!" Jacinta yelled. "Over there!"
Kelly followed the direction of her finger. She almost dropped her rifle, but hastily grabbed it as the barrel slid between her fingers. Right there, rolling towards her, was a tank, accompanied by a group of around fifteen soldiers from Stawell campus.
"Megan!" Kelly shouted, glancing around the field for her lean figure. She needed a grenade. "Dammit! Megan!"
"She's not here!" Millie's voice sounded, muffled by the continuous shooting of rounds. "I saw her leave five minutes ago, with Rebecca!"
Kelly gave an exasperated groan and stalked off towards one of the Stawell soldiers. He'd managed to grab Jacinta in a headlock with one arm, while he tightly grasped the tank beside him. Kelly elevated her rifle as she stepped right up to the soldier, now face-to-face with him. She prodded the barrel firmly into his chest.
"Let. Her. Go." Kelly growled through her teeth.
The soldier stood seven feet high, two feet taller than her. His eyes were concealed by a pair of black sunnies, catching the vividly burning fires resulting from the land mine explosions. He smelt heavily of tobacco, nearly making Kelly gag.
"I dare you to make me, shrimp." He sneered.
Kelly narrowed her eyebrows, and pulled the trigger.
The soldier leapt out of the way just as the shot was fired. Kelly's ears were loudly ringing with the noise of the shot. She clutched her temples, neglecting the rifle, and fell to her knees. Somehow, though, a loud scream was becoming increasingly audible.
Kelly lifted her head, and saw Megan limping forward towards her. Rebecca huddled close to her, holding Megan's arm securely around her shoulders.
"You shot me!" Megan cried, clenching her eyes and teeth simultaneously. "You bitch! I hate you!"
Kelly's eyes trailed from the rifle, now lying on the dirt, to the bullet hole that had appeared on Megan's right knee. There was no denying it - that was her round.
"Oh my God!" Kelly gasped, running over to the pair. "I'm so sorry, Megan. I never intended to shoot you."
"This whole situation is a mess," Rebecca sighed, flipping her brown waves from her pale face. "Kelly, can you take Megan to the college, while I -
"There's no time," Kelly interjected, hastily taking Megan into her arms. She let out an ear piercing scream. "Go, soldier. I'll handle this."
Rebecca nodded, before picking up Kelly's rifle and bounding across the field, right towards the cluster of Stawell campus soldiers. She realized, to her immense surprise, that the Sunbury campus had rocked up. The group of about one hundred students were marching towards the Stawell campus soldiers, rifles and shot guns raised.
"Please don't hurt me," Megan murmured. She was growing substantially weak, most likely from blood loss.
"I won't," Kelly murmured, leaning her lips close to Megan's ear. "I promise."
Kelly kicked open the door to the hideout, backing through the arched doorway. She sighed in temporarily relief as the wood thudded shut behind her. This whole situation had drained just about all of her energy. It was the first time that anything had demanded so much of her abilities to chew through, and she was exhausted to the point where she felt like collapsing to the stone floor. But she couldn't. Her friends needed her.
She eventually found the room she'd been hoping for, the room that she'd spent hours on end studying from the blueprints that she'd gotten her hands on. It was a large space designed to replicate a science laboratory, set up with numerous metal shelves containing numerous medicines and all types of equipment, such as beakers and measuring cylinders.
Kelly laid Megan on the science bench situated in the middle of the room, being cautious as to avoid bumping the wound. She knew there was a drawer containing surgical equipment in here, but she was disappointed as she hastily tore through all of the drawers. All of the equipment she came across weren't what she needed.
Then she found it.
"Okay, Megan," Kelly breathed, wetting her dry lips, "this is gonna hurt, but it has to be done."
Kelly turned Megan's face towards her, unsure of whether or not Megan had heard her. She had.
"Just hurry up and do it," Megan sighed. Her head fell back just as Kelly found a pillow, and placed it behind Megan's head. "No pain, no gain."
Kelly inhaled a sharp breath as she stared at the bleeding wound before her. She remembered, as a child, when her mother had tried to persuade her to learn aid. Kelly, reluctant, had declined. Now she wished she'd listened to her mother and taken up the opportunity.
She stuck the small blade into the wound. Megan inhaled a sharp breath, clenching her fists tightly by her sides. Kelly could tell that she wanted urgently to scream, but knew that Megan would never do it.
"Okay," Kelly whispered to herself. She could feel the bullet lodged deeply into her knee, but was fearful of removing it. "Are you ready?"
Megan nodded hastily as tears ran down her cheeks.
Kelly closed her eyes, positioning the edge of the blade just in front of the bullet, and propelled it out.
"AHHHHH!" Megan yelled, arching her back up from the metal. "Fu -
Kelly stuck her hand into the drawer closest to her and drew out a plastic plate, shoving it into Megan's mouth. It was most likely one that dentists used during their practices.
"Breathe," Kelly tried to reassure her. She wasn't even reassuring herself. "It's okay, Megan."
The wound began gushing out a new stream of blood. Kelly acted hastily, drawing a bandage roll from the drawer beneath the first one, and wrapped it firmly around Megan's entire knee.
"As long as we keep pressure on it, it'll stop bleeding." Kelly said, glancing at Megan's face. Her eyes were closed. She was reluctant to look at Kelly.
"You better rest on this," Kelly said, cutting the end of the roll. "You're not going back out there with a bummed knee."
Megan peeled her brown eyes open, finally meeting Kelly's gaze. "I can't do that. Rebecca needs me."
"Rebecca needs you to get better," Kelly pressed, picking up a plastic cup from one of the side benches. She filled it up with water from the tap, holding it out to Megan. "Do you want her to get distracted?"
Megan sighed, shaking her head, and took the cup.
"That's what I thought," Kelly sighed, lifting herself up onto the bench beside Megan. "You're going to be alright, trust me."
Megan wasn't convinced. Kelly could see it in her eyes. "You've never performed emergency surgery on someone before, have you?"
Kelly scratched the nape of her neck, sighing. "Is it that obvious?"
Megan rolled her eyes, glancing away. "Real surgeons would use a pair of miniature tongs to remove a bullet, not a scalpel."
Kelly nodded slowly, swinging her legs back and forth on the bench top. "Just be grateful you're alive."
Megan snorted, taking a sip from the cup. "I'll give you that one."

Rebecca hastily drew a fresh magazine from her back pack, sliding it into the bolt rifle that she held. She drew the bolt back, before pushing it back up with a click. She sighed, tucking a strip of hair behind her ear. Her hair never agreed with her when she tied it back.
"I could use a little help over here!" Millie yelled over the gun fire. The whole area smelt heavily of gun powder.
"Coming!" Rebecca boomed over the loud noise.
She held the rifle firmly between her hands, and ran to where Millie stood in the middle of the road. The asphalt now had numerous potholes, from where the land mines had gone off. About a quarter of the Sunbury campus had been collected from the area on a stretcher and rushed to an ambulance, missing an arm or an leg.
The Stawell campus soldiers were beginning to die down the slightest bit. In the beginning, there had been hundreds of them. Now, there was less than seventy left. Sunbury campus were winning, but no thanks to Megan and Rebecca's plan.
Rebecca sighed. Her mind had began to wander about Megan -- whether or not she was okay, if she missed Rebecca, if she'd make it through. Even though it was only a bullet to the knee, Rebecca knew that some of the main arteries were in the knees. Hit one and the person was basically six feet in the ground.
"Rebecca!" Millie called out. "Take the left one!"
She snapped back to reality. Standing right there in front of her was the male soldier that had been responsible for Megan's wound. He wore a smug smirk, his eyes concealed by the same thick pair of sunnies.
"Would you like to join your girlfriend in heaven?" He sneered, loading up his sawn off shot gun.
In an instant, Rebecca had elevated the rifle and fired a round into his stomach. The words that he'd just said had triggered a nerve inside of Rebecca, one that had been growing since the moment she'd first seen Megan.
The soldier staggered. His hand flew to the bullet hole gushing out blood, but Rebecca wasn't done yet. She held the rifle close to her face, and fired another round.
The soldier buckled at the knees, before falling limply to the ground.
Rebecca began to smile, feeling a sense of accomplishment. But it didn't last long. A pair of masculine arms looped through the gaps made by her elbows, and hauled her backwards.
"Let me go!" Rebecca yelled, attempting to squirm out of his grip. But his arms only tightened around her, making her mouth open, but no sound came out.
She was shoved to the ground. At last, she could see the face of her attacker. It was Sam, David's brother.
"Because of your stupid girlfriend, my brother is dead!" He growled through his teeth.
In an instant, he'd drawn a bazooka from behind his back. He held it up level with her face, and pulled -
Sam was propelled out of Rebecca's sight as a figure tackled him.
Rebecca scrambled to her feet, hastily glancing around the area for the two of them. She eventually found Sam attempting to crawl along the dirt, but the figure wasn't letting him.
The figure lifted its head, glancing up at Rebecca. She couldn't tell who it was, as they hid behind a black beanie and wore heavy armor, but she knew that it had to be someone close to her.
Sam sat up, elbowing the figure in the face. His pointy bone connected hard with the figure's nose. The figure let out a whimper, falling to its hands and knees.
"Now you're not so tough, are you?" He smirked. His hand reached for the top of the beanie, but the figure drew back sharply and got to its feet, running off.
"Wait!" Rebecca called out. But it was too late.
The bullet Sam had just fired pierced through the figure's back, flying out of its chest.
Rebecca's legs were suddenly moving without her authority, and she found herself kneeling beside the figure now. She took a brave inhale, and pulled the beanie off. Only to find herself face-to-face with Megan.
"Bec..." She gasped. Her mouth was filling up with blood, staining her teeth red. "I-I'm sorry."
Rebecca shook her head, grasping Megan's hand tightly in her own. "No, Megan. Don't say your goodbyes. You're not going to die, okay?"
Megan managed a weak smile, before going limp. Her face remained frozen in an emotionless state, her brown eyes wide open.
