Chapter 4
It was an early start the following morning. Rebecca was woken up by the frantic shaking of her arm. Opening her eyes sharply, she saw Megan leaning over her. Her thin brown hair hung over Rebecca's face, just inches from her eyes. Usually it was longer, but Megan had pulled it back into a pony tail.
"Get up," she whispered, and disappeared from Rebecca's view.
She sat up straight, her unkempt hair falling over her chest and eyes.
Megan was standing by the doorway, her hands on her thighs. She wore a black leather jacket open over her white t-shirt, and dark blue jeans which looked like a size eight pair. The buckles on her knee-high black designer boots shone in the pale illumination of early morning.
"Megan?" Rebecca asked wearily. She unlocked her iPhone 4 and checked the time. "It's 6.30 in the morning."
"I know," Megan shrugged. "We're heading out. Get Millie up, and meet me downstairs. We'll be waiting," she paused in the doorway, looking over her shoulder at Rebecca. "Oh and, wear your uniform. It's safer."
Pulling her uniform from her old schoolbag, she was struggling to keep her eyes open. She got to her feet and slipped into it, almost staggering to the floor and onto the sleeping Millie.
Rebecca took her time walking down the staircase. Her soft footsteps on the carpet were soothing, almost like the heart beat if someone healthy. At the foot of the stairs was David, dressed up in his uniform. Standing beside him was Sam, eyeing Millie who was lagging behind Rebecca.
"Looking nice girls," David smiled. "Perhaps tonight you can sleep with us."
"Dream on, horny fuck," Megan said, suddenly appearing by Rebecca's side. "You want to get laid? Go be a chicken's egg."
Rebecca and Millie chuckled, while David and Sam narrowed their eyes into slits. Megan didn't care. She turned to the two girls, smiling softly.
"Phil said the other military force should be up near the high school."
The high school Megan navigated them to wasn't much of a school, about fourteen feet of land horizontal wise at the front. Soldiers paced the fence, rifles slung across their torsos. There were no signs of female habitation. All the soldiers they saw were males.
Megan pulled Rebecca down beside her, hiding behind a nearby bush. Rebecca was astonished Megan was being so nice to her.
"Look I'm sorry I was so cold to you these past few days," she whispered to Rebecca, "I find it hard to trust people. I can't explain why, right now. I'll explain at a later time."
"I lied," Rebecca sighed, looking down at the pale ground. "My dad and I moved to Sunbury because he got a promotion. I said because of my mother's death so you would soften up, and maybe treat me nicer."
Megan's eyes sharpened, but she didn't snap like Rebecca was expecting her to. She swallowed hard, remaining silent.
David and Sam sprung up suddenly from their bush, shoving into Megan. She staggered into Rebecca, landing over her.
"You're really beautiful," Rebecca said bluntly, looking up into Megan's eyes.
She sat up sharply, her eyes occupied with the same acidity Rebecca had seen in them earlier the previous day. "Don't you ever come near me again, slut."
She kicked Rebecca hard in the side and stalked off, leaving her to groan in agony.
She sat up, clutching her side rippling with pain.
