Tip #1: BE CREATIVE!!!

I believe that this is the most important tip in writing. Hopefully, other writers agree with me. The reason why? Well, without being creative, how can you start making a book or poem or haiku even? Sure there are books such as autobiographies or biographies or poems that state facts, but even then you have to be a little creative with the words. You need to have an imaginative mind to get a story rolling along. Whether it sounds childish or weird, write it down so you don't forget. Sometimes I personally feel that my book Seasons Greeting sounds a bit childish when I describe it to people, but when I work on it and continue writing new chapters, it most definitely doesn't sound childish. And I don't mean for that to sound conceited if it does. I'm just pointing out that no matter what idea you have, be sure to write it down because having that creative idea coursing through your mind could evolve into an amazing novel/series. So if you want to be a successful writer, BE CREATIVE first.
