Feeling Small

Ryan's POV

Oh my God. My best friend is in the hospital and may never wake up again. How the fuck do these things happen? She's my best friend, she has been for my whole life. I can't think, so I take a breath and call Tanner.

"Hello?" He answers after the first ring. He always does.

"Sarah's in the hospital. Go now." I say, hanging up and flopping onto the floor. I'm at work, I got a job at pets mart, for the time being. I thought I might be able to find something better, but I still haven't and it's been months.

I dial Sarah's old home phone number, praying that it hasn't been changed or disconnected. It rings four times, and I almost give up until, "Hello?" A young man's voice says.

"Oh my God, Dilly! OK, is your mom there, Dil?" I ask, trying to stay calm for the thirteen year old. I don't want him to freak out. God forbid that I have to tell him he bad news.

"Yeah, but I doubt she'll talk to you unless it's an emergency, Ry." He sounds so angry at her. I don't really blame him, considering how Mrs. Zeal is. She may have even gotten worse with age.

"It is. I promise you, I'll tell you after I talk to you're mom, OK?" Hopefully not, I don't want to be the one who gives him this bad news.

"OK, one sec." His voice sounds slightly worried, as he yells for his mom.

"Why are you calling me?" Mrs. Zeal's annoying, bitchy voice rings through my ears.

"You know what? I know you don't like your daughter, but--"

"What daughter? I don't have a daughter, I have a son." She cuts me off. Is she for real? I'm being serious, and she's acting like a fucking child!

"YOU BITCH! SARAH IS IN THE FUCKING HOSPITAL!" I rage, unable to control my emotions any longer.

"She's what?! I'm not paying the bill, if that's what this is about." I cannot deal with such an ignorant person anymore, I'm not sure how Sarah has for most of her life.

"She's in a coma. Also, we live in Canada, where there is free health care. Are you coming or not?"

"No. She can burn in hell for all I care, the little slut!" I gape at my phone for a moment and then breath deeply.

"Fine, but I will fly Dillan out here, whether you like it or not. At least he loves her." I hang up the phone, seething with anger, and search the internet for cheap plane tickets.

"Dillan!" I yell as he runs towards me after dismounting the airplane. He looks like he's been run over by a cement truck. And I hug him tightly to my body. We should have never left him behind.

"Ryan! Where is she? I need to see her, I want her to live so badly and she needs to know that." He cries.
I lead him to my car and we drive towards the hospital.

"One thing I forgot to tell you." Dillan mumbles, sheepishly. "Brendon, uh, Brendon came by looking for Sarah right before I left, and I told him that she was here." Brendon? He's out of jail? Well that just makes things so much more complicated. What's Sarah going to do? She just got over him, and she might be dying, that makes two heartbroken boys. Make that seven, including Dillan, Matt, Mike, Ian and Tanner.
