the layered white on the earth was dented with small, soft footprints. the squirrel near the base of a bare tree flicked its tail, its fur bristling. vehicles whizzed past, the smoke trails resembling a foggy april morning. the delicate clouds disappeared, spreading through the crisp air. headlights shone like brightly colored paint palettes, each a different shade of light yellow. the children in the back seat slumped against the material of the cushions, their eyes droopy and their heads full of dreams. the whole space was draped in a darkness that was nothing short of the night's blanket. the sky glittered and shimmered with one billion stars and counting, the wisps of colored dust creating an artist's canvas, a discarded draft of a painting. the squirrel scales a tree, his tail still swishing. the automobiles pass. the children dream. and all is still.
