in the small story "them", the previous chapter i wrote, there's seemingly "random" non-italicized words throughout the story.
if you noticed, one of the main characters, "g", does not have their name italicized. before this character is introduced, everything is in italics.
as the story progresses, more and more words are not italicized. this signifies the effect that "g" is having on "their" life. the last sentence of the poem is not written in italics at all. the italics symbolized "their" inability to come out of their shell, or, in this case, their "safe". once they came out of their "safe" ("and they began to live their life outside of the bulletproof metal."), nothing was italicized due to the fact that they had finally let go of their insecurities and began to be who they are.
thank you for reading it!
