Edythe Rosemary Mullen had always considered to be too smart for her age; she was speaking full sentences at 11 months and could read by the time she was two. This often got her in trouble, especially with her father. Hank Mullen was a firm believer in the saying, "girls are meant to be seen and not heard." And Edie had, well, a habit of talking back and questioning any type of authoritative command, as well as everything anyone said to her.
Until she learned what Hank's belt buckle felt like against her backside.
That put an end to her endless questions.
But Edie's mother soon found out what had been going on from a school nurse, and filed for a divorce that same day. Two nights later, Leslie Mullen packed their belongings and left with her two daughters as soon as Hank passed out. She drove for seven hours straight, headed to her childhood home where her mother and stepfather still lived.
And that's where this story begins.
