The week before Valentine’s Day, the week that girls freak out about whether or not they will get a nice gift from their boyfriend or crush. Honestly, I don’t see why people – especially girls – whine about Valentine’s Day. It isn’t even a real holiday. I’m sure that for people who actually have a significant other, it may have a little more meaning. But either way, it makes no sense.
Clubs at school are selling candy grams, roses, pictures, or songs; all very touching. The other day, someone asked me to buy one. I considered it. But who would I send it to? I guess I could send it to him and make it anonymous. Or I could just send it to myself.
Now, him, you ask? Luhan, a junior, a gorgeous and kindhearted junior that all of the girls swooned over, including me. I guess that I am probably no different than all of the other girls, except that he and I used to be friends. I don’t know why we don’t speak to each other anymore. We just went off in separate directions. We met because of mutual friends anyway. I was never close to him. But I did know him.
Anyway, he was receiving a large number of love notes, poems, balloons, and candy, with desperate girls hoping to receive some sort of notion of acceptance. Unfortunately, none of those girls received anything. It discouraged me from sending anything to him.
“Hey! Lindy!”
“Yes?” I see my friend, Yuri, briskly walking towards me, waving a pink paper in her hands.
“Guess what?!” she says excitedly.
“What?”
“Kai sent me a poem! He’s so sweet!”
Kai is one of Luhan’s friends. He is just as gorgeous and if one of the girls isn’t crushing on Luhan, they are infatuated with Kai. Just like Yuri.
“Oh my gosh! You are so lucky! Have you talked to him?!”
“Yes! He asked me out on a date! I must be the luckiest girl on Earth!” She continues to wave the pink sheet of paper around. It is impossible to imagine how badly I want to slam her head into the lockers next to me. Yuri was nice and rather pretty. But she can be so beyond arrogant that you want to smash her face into a wall, hoping to leave an imprint in the wall and a flat nose.
“Oh! That’s great!” I say, trying to sound the least bit happy for her. In all honesty, I am jealous. If I can’t have Luhan, it would be nice to know that Kai is still available.
“Well, I have to tell the rest of the cheer squad about this! They will be so jealous!” Oh that’s right; she is on the cheer squad too. And here’s me wanting to slam her into a wall again.
“Okay! Bye!”
When she leaves, I open my locker to get my books before my next class begins after lunch. Thank goodness today is Friday. I don’t know how much longer I am going to be able to stand being here in this stupid place with stupid people. I close my locker with my algebra binder in hand and walk off to meet my best friend, Claire.
I begin to walk to my algebra class to meet Claire. Before I get to the door, I hear someone call my name.
“Lindy! Lindy! Wait!”
I freeze. It is Luhan. Why is Luhan calling me?
“Hey! Lindy! I wanted to ask you something!”
I stand there in awe for a moment, admiring his features. His perfect blond hair, porcelain white skin, and chocolate brown eyes, all complimented the rest of his facial features.
“Lindy?” he says, snapping me out of my reverie.
“Huh? Oh? Yes?” I feel heat rushing up to my cheeks after the realization that I was just staring at him for an entire minute while he was trying to ask me a question. I feel like slamming my own head into the wall.
“I…I uh, wanted to ask you if you wanted to join me for dance practice after school? The uh, dance club uh, said we should pick partners for our next routine for the Valentine’s Day Dance. I know this is short notice since it is next week. But I was just wondering if you uh, wanted to be my partner…?”
“Yes! Of course I would!” I say, almost too immediately, “I mean, sure I’ll be your partner…” I mentally slap myself in the face.
“Oh! That’s great then!” I see something in his eyes brighten. “I will meet you after school in the gym.”
“Okay! I will see you then!”
We wave goodbye to each other while I stand in the hall, smiling like an idiot who just realized that they had cream all over their lips after a cup of coffee at Starbucks.
“Who was that?” I hear Claire say, nearly laughing.
“Um…Luhan is my new dance partner?”
“He is? Didn’t you join the dance club to uh…how should I put this? Stalk him?”
“What?! No! Of course not! Why would I do that?!” I say, obviously in self-denial.
“Right, of course you wouldn’t,” Claire skeptically remarks.
"Anyway! Did you hear that Kai sent Yuri a poem?" I ask, changing the subject.
"What? Kai sent Yuri a poem? What are you talking about? She told me that he took her poem and sent it back to her. Haha, that's what she deserves."
So that's why I've always wanted to slam Yuri into a wall. I forgot to mention that she tends to lie... a lot. But hey, at least Kai is still on the market!
"Well then..." I say, disappointed with my ignorance during my conversation with Yuri.
"I know. I always want to push her off a bridge whenever that happens. But anyway, back to Luhan. Did he ask you to the dance next week?"
"Well, not exactly. The dance club is doing some routines that we are going to show off next week. I didn't realize that it was a partner thing though. So, I'm not his formal date. But I do get to dance with him! It must count for something!"
"Yeah, I suppose. Who knows? Maybe you will become his formal date! And then you'll get married and live happily ever after!"
"Oh Claire! Always being optimistic!" I sigh. "If only the things you said were true..."
The bell rings signaling the end of the lunch break. I say goodbye to Claire while leaving for my last class of the day and anticipating my meeting with Luhan after school.
