Chapter Forty-SixOld Friend
Unwelcoming and dark with fury his eyes meet my shocked gaze. His hostile and murderous look caused a spiral of shudders that broke through my spine and ran the course down my body. He was angry at me for disobeying him, yet his eyes slid away from mine to Isaac sitting closely beside me. His gaze instantly hardened and his eyes turned black with the desire to kill.
Please no.
Nathan was changed, his expression fierce and completely blinded by his fiery and unpredictable fury. His eyes did not even glance my way as he charged towards the bar, his eyes directed at anyone but me.
Like a volcano about to erupt, the pub was silent in apprehension, everyone frozen in shock. The tension was building in the quiet yet breathless atmosphere. It was like a deadly calm before the unstoppable storm.
Nathan then seized Issac by the neck, pushing him up against the bar as his chair fell from beneath him and landed a few inches away from my feet. It clattered onto the wooden floor with a loud and contrasting sound, which broke the spell of silence.
"You surprise me old friend" Nathan seethed against Issac's ear, squeezing his neck firmly between his fingers, resulting in agonizing and desperate gasps for breaths "I thought I had seen the last of you, when I had left you for as good as dead in that alleyway. I should have known better, vermin like you don't die without a struggle"
They know each other? My breath hitched in shock. I was unable to speak, unable to move yet I still caught out the corner of my eye the image of the old barman, Chester, pulling something out from behind the bar. It looked like a shot gun, only far more deadly. It was entwined with silver metal, an old and intricate style of design warped around the guns exterior and I guessed that it wasn't loaded with regular bullets.
"Let him go" Chester pointed the silver gun at Nathan's head "We had an agreement"
Nathan's hand didn't falter around Issacs neck as he turned to the old man who had looked so innocent and harmless five minutes ago. However, now his eyes were narrowed and determined, his harsh wrinkle lines creased firmly in disgust.
"Chester" Nathan's eyebrow raised, as if his presence mildly surprised him "The agreement was simple, even an old dying man could understand, don't act coy with me"
"You said you'd leave this town alone" Chester sounded confident but the hand holding the gun shook violently as he spoke. His desperate emotion evident in his face.
"I said I'd keep vampires off the scent of this private little breather town" He replied his eyes returning to Issac as he squeezed his neck harder and in result his breath became starved and desperate for oxygen.
The color from his face was draining away and dread pooled my stomach. What was Nathan going to do?
"And in return for my goodwill, this little rat would disappear off the face of the earth" Nathan growled against Issac's face "Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough, perhaps I should make it all easier and end this all for him, right now"
"No!" Chester boomed, his finger poised on the trigger "Don't you dare Nathan. Don't think I'm afraid to use this"
He chuckled unhumorously, glancing briefly at the old man "Put down your toy Chester. Do you think I seriously believe that you would ever pull that trigger on me? I'm the only reason this town is still breathing and your people are still living. You kill me, and you condemn all your people" He shook his head in frustration "You think all vampires are like me Chester but you are so wrong. They won't just feed, they'll reek havoc upon this place the moment they realize this is the town who dared to kill their precious Vampire prince"
