Coley
I happily sigh as I clutch my newly bought school books in my arms, hugging them closely to my body as I walk along the stone path. It's an amazing feeling walking across the campus of NYU.
The early September air is still warm, but summer is coming to an end, meaning it'll be getting cooler day by day. I opted to wear a light jacket to accommodate the weather, as well as my light washed ripped jeans, and combat boots. Under the jacket I have my flannel, and I'm wearing a pair of Ray Bans, since it's sunny out.
I'm now registered to two courses for the year, and I am so happy to have a sort of footing in life. I only have writing on Mondays and Thursdays, and dance on Wednesday nights. It's just the perfect amount to keep me occupied during the week.
I feel my phone vibrate in the pocket of my jacket, and I shift my books to one arm in order to retrieve it. Looking at the screen, I see that I've received a text from Sam. Surprised, I unlock it, reading it.
Sam: Hey! I haven't heard from you in a while. What's going on? :(
Guilt immediately washes over me. I've been the worst friend to Sam, lately. He's become a sort of brother to me in the short time we've become friends, and I've left him out of all the recent drama. I feel terrible. I walk over to a nearby bench, and sit down, placing my books beside me, before typing out my response to Sam.
Me: I'm so sorry, Sam. Things have been kind of crazy, lately...
Sam: Please, don't leave me out, Coley. Talk to me. Are you and Sonya ok?
I sigh. He cares so much about us... He showed that when he helped us deal with Trenton. I need to tell him.
Me: Well, after we told you on Thursday about us, we told her parents on Friday. And, you can probably imagine how that went.
Sam: Oh fuck... How is she doing? Are you guys okay? Where are you?
I bite my lip. He's going to flip when he finds out we're in New York City. I push back the hair that fell into my eyes, and type out my text.
Me: We had no idea what to do after her mom kicked her out. Especially since she decided to call my mom and out me... So yeah. We knew we had to get out of Austin because we just couldn't live there anymore. So we texted my sister Maddison, packed up a few things, and drove up to live with her in New York. So, here we are, in the Big Apple.
After pressing send, I take in an anxious breath. It's nerve-wracking still, thinking about living away from Austin. Especially since practically no one knows about, except for my sister, my mother, and now, Sam. I see that he's typing his response, and I hold my breath.
Sam: What?! Seriously? Why didn't you guys tell me? :( I could've totally helped...
Me: I know, it's just everything happened at once. You did come across our minds though, Sam. You mean a lot to us.
Sam: It's okay, I'm just glad you guys are okay. And it's kind of ironic that you guys are in New York, considering I'm going to school there!
What?! This is news to me, I mean, I knew he was going to school, but he never told me he decided on New York. Excitedly, I type out my text.
Me: WTF? Why didn't you tell me?! That's so cool! We'll be in the same city! Well, if you're going to NYU, that is. I'm taking a couple classes there!
Sam: Yeah, I'm taking Science there! My flight leaves in a few hours, so I'll be getting there early evening today.
Excitement takes over my body. This is great news! Now the three of us will be together.
