My mother wasn't the only casualty of her death. My sister, Jackie, ran away and never contacted us again. She was older than us though but younger than Eron. She didn't take my mother's death well. She cried for days, she screamed, she broke things, lots and lots of things. Jackie slapped me sixteen times for not crying or screaming too. I never fought back though. I never hit her back, I never tried to move so that she couldn't hit me.

When I said she's my sister, I meant she's adopted. We adopted her when she was fourteen and she was about sixteen when my mom died but my mother was the only one who really believed in Jackie. My mother was a social worker and she got tired of seeing Jackie so upset so she adopted her.

Then when Isaac, Danny and Derek left, my dad hit me. At first it was like once a week when he was upset. Then it was almost every day. Either just a slap and a hit or a beating. He stopped after about a year but when I went to the doctor, I had to spend all summer that year recovering in the hospital. My father apologized and I forgave him because I knew what he was going through.

I put my slippers on and headed down the stairs. I opened the cupboard and grabbed the hot chocolate packets. My hair was in a long pony tail and I had some checkered pajama shorts on, as well as a t-shirt and a light blue jacket on.

I put on some music and the song 'Midnight City' by M83 came on. I turned it on low and got a mug for my hot chocolate. Kayden came down stairs and we grabbed the milk out of the fridge as I grabbed another mug.

I held the two mugs out in front of him and he poured milk into both of them. I put them down as he grabbed the hot chocolate powder from the pantry. He returned with a box of Swiss Miss hot chocolate. He poured some of the powder into the mugs and I put them in the microwave for one minute.

"So, Homecoming was interesting." Kayden said as I pressed the start button. I nodded as he sighed. The next song came on, and I recognized it as a remix of 'Search Party'. He took out the hot chocolates and gave me one. I took it, eager to drink something since my allergies always made my throat dry in the morning. "I think I need to go alone this weekend, but I'll bring you some carrots." He said, and I nodded.

"Have fun." I said, and he smiled. "See you Monday."  He chugged his hot chocolate, put it in the sink, waved and left the kitchen. Rocco appeared at my feet, so I scratched his head and opened the door that led to the beach as the football team all yelled from the living room.

I walked to the water and Rocco jumped around me as I laughed. I jump towards him, and he jumped back, clearly surprised as I smiled. He jumped on me, and I fell to the ground, still laughing. He licked my face, and I sat up, scratching his ear as he panted heavily in amusement. My eyes were on the water though. Sometimes I wished that I could disappear into the ocean, just leave everything behind, but clearly I couldn't.

Cat stood up, and Rocco ran after her as she ran away from her, clearly hysterically laughing. Her hair was up in a ponytail, but it flew with the wind as she ran towards the water. She had shorts on, a t-shirt and a jacket on, and she looked amazing. She jumped away from Rocco and found a tennis ball on the ground. She threw it in the water and he went to get it.

She looked up and saw me looking at her through the window. Rocco sat in front of her, and she knelt down, taking her eyes off of me. She stole it from his mouth, kissed his forehead and threw the ball. He ran after it, and she starting heading back for the house.

Rocco had the ball in his mouth as the sliding door to the kitchen opened. Cat walked in, and Rocco ran into the living room, going passed us into the den. Cat kicked off her shoes in the kitchen and walked into the living room.
