Chapter 13

I follow Harry to the elevator and he selects the floor his dad must be on. I wonder how he already knows where it is but I don't ask.

I lean into Harry and he squeezes my hand with appreciation. When the doors open I follow him down the white halls to the room at the very end. The doctor is already in the room staring down at the unconscious body.

"My god." Harry whispers and looks away from his fathers body.

The tube is connected to his fathers mouth, and there are many needles sticking into his skin. The doctor looks up to me and Harry but then back down to his clipboard.

"Are you related." The doctor looks to me and Harry.

"Uh...yeah. I'm his son." Harry murmurs hardly above a whisper.

"Well your father has had alot of damage to his lungs, and his brain. The only thing keeping him alive now is the machine." The doctor looks to us again, the down to his papers once again in his hands.

"Is he going to die." Harry asks the doctor harshly.

"That just depends on wether his body is receptive to the medicine we are injecting him with. The steroids are very strong, and if they don't work it could end up causing more damage." He walks around the bed to the monitor, while me and Harry are still standing in the door way. "We should know the outcome within a couple of hours."

Harry looks down to me with glossy eyes , and I can feel the hopelessness from him.

"You are welcome to stay and-"

"Harry?"

The doctor is cut off by a woman walking towards the door.

Harry runs his hands through his hair and closes his eyes.

"Uh- hey." He says moving away from me, opening his eyes to the now very close woman.

"Oh my gosh. I just-I can't believe you are here." She says eyes wide.

The woman must be in her 40's, she is very short, shorter then me with jet black hair. She looks very tired, and you can tell her eyes are red from crying. She obviously knows Harry's dad, but I wonder how.

"I mean...I just thought I should come." He says running his hand again through his hair, his voice sounding agrivated.

I squeeze Harry's hand to remind him I'm still there, and I think he understood what I ment.

"Oh...uh, yeah- this is Alex. Alex this is Anne, my mom." Harry looks at us both awkwardly.

"Hi. It's nice to meet you." I shake her hand and she returns my smile.

"Are you and Harry dating?" She glances to both of us.

I was about to respond but Harry answered first.

"Um-no." Harry angrily glances at his mother.

His answer hurt me inside. What are we doing? I don't know him very well, just as he dosen't know me. I guess we really aren't dating but I still wish his answer would have been yes.

The doctor started to approach us, as only now I remember we are standing outside his fathers hospital room.

The three of us looked to the doctor as he looked up from his clipboard.

"We won't have any results of the treatment for a couple of hours, but you are welcome to stay and wait." He said starting to exit the room.

"Thank you." Anne tells him before he walks down the hall.

Harry moves to stand closer to me again, but I move away from his touch. He looks down to me with confusion on his face, but I just look away. I can't pretend like I'm not still hurt from his immediate refusal of our relationship.

"Um Harry..." Anne asks interrupting our silent conversation. He now looks away from me, and towards his mother. "You may not want to, but you and Alex are more then welcome to stay with me and wait."

"No, that's okay." Harry harshly responds to Anne's invitation. "We are gonna go get something to eat, but I'll come back later." He adds, making Anne smile brightly.

"Okay, well see you then." She says still beaming. "It was really nice meeting you, Alex" She looks at me.

"You too." I smile back at her.

Harry grabs my hand, even though I didn't offer him to hold it, and pulls me away from the door. We start to walk down the hall, and the tension is almost unbearable.

"You could have invited her to come eat with us." I tell Harry.

"Your joking right?" He asks me and I nod me head no.

"Hell no. She dosen't get to pretend like she is apart of my life now." He says and my eyes widen.

"Wait. What? You don't see her often?" I ask and Harry shakes his head.

"Can we talk about this at the restraunt? I really don't want to discuss this in the middle of a hospital." He asks and I nod.

We walk out into the street, but instead of calling a taxi Harry leads me down the sidewalk.
