It was Poker Night for Benicio and the boys. Gathered around the table was Benicio, Joey, Dino, and Mickey, who had a chorus girl sitting on his lap. The area in which they sat was so heavily filled with cigarette smoke, Benicio had to squint in order to see his cards.
"Do you think the nigger was telling the truth about that Delaney?" Dino asked with his ciggy dangling from his lips.
The time spent with Kenzie was making Benicio hate hearing the racist term, but being the ruthless Boss he was, he didn't let it be known.
Dino continued. "If I was a Boss,-"
"-Which you ain't.-" Joey added boredly.
"-I wouldn't send a few boys down to start trouble, then a messenger to threaten a bootlegger. It's been a month and we ain't heard nothing. If I was a Boss,-"
"-Which you ain't.-" Joey said again, this time Benicio snickered a bit.
"-I would've sent boys down here to take over. I mean what's he waitin' for?"
Benicio took a long sig of his gin. He was seriously considering going to Chicago himself and taking on Patrick Delaney. It wouldn't be a wise move on his part, he truly didn't know if he should believe Jackson or not.If he made the wrong move it could cost him everything, even Kenzie.
He looked at the chorus girl on Mickey's lap. The entire time she's been in the room she couldn't take her eyes off of him. He found himself comparing her looks to Kenzie and she had nothing on her.
"Scram." He said bitterly with a jerk of his head.
Only Dino would be the one to bring up such important business in front of a chorus girl. Benicio made a mental note to check him later on.
The young woman looked at Mickey for help, but the only thing he did was take a long drag of his cigarette and grin.
"Sorry darlin'" he said, "Boss's orders."
The young woman grunted and left the room making snide remarks under her breath. Benicio didn't like it, little did she know she wouldn't be working at The Hot Spot anymore.
"He's telling the truth Dino." Benicio said placing chips in the center of the table. "Jackson won't lie to me. The Clearwater's are good people."
"Since when do they have a name." Dino asked.
"My Pop respects them and so do I. You forget I am marrying his sister."
"Ah take a load off, will ya Bennie. All Dino is saying is it sounds a little fishy. Maybe the boy has a few tricks up his sleeves. You don't think he will accept Delaney's offer, do ya?" Mickey added with seriousness.
Benicio sighed. "No, he won't betray me. The blacks...." he began. "...they are very loyal. It would be a wise thing for you to befriend some of them."
Dino knitted his thick eyebrows together and waved his hand dismissively. "Ah what a bunch of baloney."
"The more important question is have you asked Big Daddy if he knows of a Patrick Delaney?" Joey asked toying with his poker chips.
Benicio knew what the look in Joey's eyes meant. He wanted to kill. It's almost been a month since the incident at the Southland Bistro. Joey hasn't watched the life leave anyone's eyes in so long. He was like a caged dog scratching to be set free.
