The second Maya opened the door to their apartment, she knew something was going on. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, the only noise sounding like a heavy envelope anxiously tapping against a hard surface, causing guilt to immediately rush through her. She didn't think she'd been out too long, but the nervous knocking told her otherwise.
"B? Mum?" She called, hanging up her coat on the back of the door before following the tapping.
"Maya!" Bianca exclaimed, welcoming her sister with a warm grin, "I've been waiting for you to get home so I could finally open this!"
"What is it?" Maya asked, curiously peering at the large envelope that had since stilled once Maya entered. At this question, Bianca's grin seemed to widen while also appearing more nervous.
As though she didn't think she'd be able to tell her herself, Bianca merely flipped it around so her sister could see the NYU stamp, her hands shaking ever so slightly. It took everything Maya had not to rip the letter from B's hands and tear it open herself, the urge itself causing Maya to realise how hard it must've been for her to wait to open it.
"B, this is so exciting! Why haven't you opened it already?"
"I wanted to wait for you, whether it's good news or bad news, I want you to be by my side." The oldest sibling explained, shrugging like waiting was no big deal; when in reality it was torture. Her future was literally in her hands and she had grown so anxious she was afraid she might burst if she didn't find out the verdict soon. "Now that you're here, shall we find out my fate?"
"For sure!" Maya smiled, genuinely touched that Bianca had even thought to wait for her. The action reminding her of how Josh had driven all the way to New York this morning, just to open his letter in front of his older brother. "You know, you and Josh have more in common than what meets the eye."
"Ugh, let's not ruin this by bringing him into this, please." Bianca playfully groaned, taking one last nervous breath before hastily ripping the envelope open and quickly scanning the letter, failing to make sense of it before Maya snatched it out of her hands.
"Blah, blah, blah, blah, more useless information, blah, bl- wait, wait! Bianca," Maya said, pausing to look up at her sister before continuing, "you did it. You got in! Scholarship included!"
"What? No way!" Bianca practically screamed, a large smile stretched across her face matching Maya's proud expression.
"You did it! You really made it, B!" Maya told her again, rushing into her sister's open arms. "I knew you could do it."
"Thank you, I honestly don't know what I'd do without you." Bianca murmured into Maya's hair, her bright smile evident in her tone.
"Ditto." Maya whispered back, unable to explain how proud she was.
"Ditto?" Bianca laughed, pulling back and raising an eyebrow at the youngest Hart girl.
"I don't know why I said that either, but you get the point." She replied, rolling her eyes as she sat down at the bench. "So to celebrate, how about we have some chicken pasta?"
"Not tonight, kiddo. How about I take you out to celebrate?"
"That sounds even better." Maya grinned back, spinning around in her chair. Both girls, understandably, the happiest they had been in a long time and nothing could bring them down.
"Great, I'll just go get mum!"
-
All three of them decided to go out to Bianca's favourite pizza place for dinner, pride practically pouring out of their mother as the three girls couldn't wipe the grins of their faces. Bianca had insisted that Maya and their mum went to find them a table while she ordered; 1 large Hawaiian and 3 diet cokes with straws.
While she waited, Bianca absentmindedly traced over the menu, too occupied with the thought that her hard work was finally paying off and that she now had a chance to make something of herself to pay attention to much of her surroundings. Although as she waited, her head snapped up as a certain presence became known to her and she rolled her eyes.
"You have an awful bad habit of running into me, you know." Josh commented, smirking as he lent up against the empty bar next to the blonde.
"I believe it to be bad luck." Bianca quipped back, matching his smirk. She was in much too good of a mood to be bothered by him right now so she was just gonna play along.
"Really? Whenever you're near, I tend to think I got lucky."
"And you think those smooth lines are going to work on me?"
"Maybe, you seem to be in a much better mood."
"Ah, but that has nothing to do with you. I'm in such a good mood because I just found out I got into NYU." She proudly told him, not even caring if he thought she was bragging, but he obviously didn't because his expression visibly brightened.
"Wow, congratulations! Seems like my luck just got better, I get to spend next semester with you."
"Um, what?" Bianca asked, her happy expression faltering as she processed his words and he just grinned wider.
"Didn't Maya tell you? I found out I got in to NYU this morning."
"Of course you did." Bianca laughed, she just couldn't shake this boy.
"Looks like you better get used to me, Hart because I'm not going anywhere. Mark my words, I will get you to like me." Josh simply replied, giving her a boyish smile and a wink.
"Next!" The waitress called out, looking at Bianca and Josh expectantly; saving the blonde from stuttering out a reply as she just gave him a pointed look before approaching the counter. She knew he was right and it could be the excitement talking, but the funny thing was that she didn't mind one bit.
