Calum groaned and threw the controller across the room, hitting the wall of Michael's basement.

The mute boy smiled and shrugged, looking at the score on the screen. He won yet again, and Calum was sick of losing.

"You're a cheater." He rolled his eyes, and Michael shook his head. Calum and Michael both knew he didn't cheat, but Calum wasn't close to admitting it.

Michael checked the time.

2:31 AM.

His dad would be back in about an hour, at most, which met Calum would have to leave.

"I think you should go now." Michael texted him, but Calum frowned.

"It's a Friday night, we don't have anywhere to be." Calum told him with a slight smile.

"You have to go." Michael told him, standing up and throwing his phone on the couch. Calum stood up and moved closer to Michael, pulling the hem of his shirt up, exposing his pale tummy.

"This is why you want me to leave, right? Your dads hitting you again?" Calum sighed, looking at the scars lining his spine.

"You can come with me, Michael. You don't have to live like this again. You and I both know my mom loves you like a son. She'll take you in. You can live with us, we can be happy." Calum begged, but Michael just shook his head. One week, he'll be gone. Everyone will be happy.

"I'm not leaving here without you!" Calum's voice cracked, and tears started to fill his eyes.

"You're my best friend, Michael Clifford. You're the only thing that's gotten me through these lonely years. You're my brother, and I can't leave you here for more scars." He broke down, tugging at Michael's wrist. Tears raced down his cheeks, his nose getting pink.

Michael picked up his phone and kept his gaze away from his crying best friend, because he knew he'd cry too if he saw tears.

"If you don't leave now you're going to get hurt, too. I'm used to it Calum, it's not going to be like this forever. We're going to be happy one day."

Michael looked up at the tan boy reading the message.

"He can whip me with a belt, break my nose, I don't care! We can be happy now Michael, just please come on!" Calum begged, sorrowful eyes pleading at his best friend.

Than something that's never happened before struck. His doorbell rang.

His dad never rang the doorbell. He always came through the back.
