I woke up with a light feeling in my heart. I knew that my long wait has come to an end. Today is my eighteenth birthday, and I just can't help but to be excited.
My dad, Keith Davidson, greeted me the moment I walked down on the stairs. I rushed to him and gave him a big hug, for he has always been there for me through the years. We sat opposite to each other on the table. He had already prepared breakfast for us.
" Carmel, we prepared a small party for you. We're so sorry that we can't give you a grand party." he said with a bit of an apologetic tone.
"It's alright, dad. You don't really have to prepare a big party for me. I'm okay with just a small one. Together with you and my friends." I answered and took a sip of my milk.
He smiled at me.
I am Carmel Davidson. A simple girl living in a town in North Carolina. I am a high school student and the only daughter of my brilliant parents- Keith and Jane Davidson. Life has been good for us all these years. My dad is a successful painter in our town while my mom owns a restaurant . They taught me to always put my feet on the ground and to be nice to everyone. And as a result, I gained a lot of friends.
The party was just a small one, held on our medium-sized backyard. Many of my friends and relatives came to greet me, and one of which was Angela Keates, my mom's best friend, with her five- month old son.
"Happy birthday, Carmel!" she greeted me happily.
"Thanks. This is Sean, right?"
She nodded.
" And he greets you a happy birthday!" I smiled at her and looked at the child. That cute little kid is so innocent and so handsome. I wish I will have a son like him. He seems like an angel to me.
I lay down on my bed that night, looking at the hourglass that my mother gave me a while ago. It's like an heirloom that has been passed on to another generation. I don't know why, but that thing seemed to be so mysterious to me. I grabbed it from my side table and looked at it for a long time. And then, when a burst of intuition came into my mind, I reversed it. My eyes widened when I saw a beam of light came out from the hourglass. The light was so strong that it made me blind. I closed my eyes and never opened it for some time.
I felt like I was on a journey, to some unknown place and time. I closed my eyes, afraid that I would see something terrible.
In just a few minutes, I fell asleep.
