It was near sunset when I visited the nearby cliff located few blocks from our house. There, sudden memories of my own solitude from way back in high school began to appear in my mind. Whenever I feel down or lonely, or even happy, I go to that cliff to shout all my feelings out. Some people thought that I was going crazy, and some just smiled, thinking that I was brave enough to express my feelings.

I brought the hourglass with me. As the sands run to the tiny bridge in between, I could feel joy in my heart. Finally, I would be the one to break and end this curse that cost my grand relatives a lot of tears. I stood near the edge, facing the calm sea and feeling the cool breeze hit me.

I took a few steps backward and let the hourglass slip from my hands. What I saw before my eyes were scattered sands and splintered glasses. Some of the grains fell on the sea. I used my feet to throw the broken glass away, and one by one, the pieces of the dreaded hourglass were all eaten up by the roaring waves of the sea.

Finally, it was over. I could feel nothing but happiness and contentment.

Sean Keates, wherever you are, always remember, that you’ll be forever in my heart.
