I went out of the room. I was surprised to see Sandra standing in the front door. This only meant she saw me taking care of her brother.
“Flirting with him, huh?” she said.
“No, I’m just doing my job.” I said firmly.
“Your job? You’re kidding yourself, Carmel.”
I glared at her.
Aren’t you kidding yourself as well, Sandra? You can’t even take care of Sean, and now you have all the guts to yell at me? How dare you.”
I walked away from her, but she grabbed my arm.
“Remember this, Carmel, you will never have my brother as your husband. You’re just a useless wench!” she said fiercely with her eyes locked on mine.
“Oh, really? Don’t worry, he’s just my boss.”
I set myself free from her grasp and left her alone.
I checked on Sean the next morning. I sat by the bedside while he was sleeping. I touched his forehead and smiled. His temperature had gone low.
I proceeded to the living room and found out the prevailing situation. Angela’s diamond necklace was missing. All of them tried to look for it but the thing was nowhere to find.
Jean nudged my elbow as I stared blankly at them. “Hey, do you know where is it?” she asked, referring to the necklace.
“I don’t know.” I shrugged.
They have searched the twenty quarters of the housemaids, and again, they ended up with none.
“Maybe it’s in your room, Carmel.” Sandra said with an accusing tone.
“No,” I said with certainty. I couldn’t afford to steal anything, not even a single flower from my neighbor’s backyard.
“Well, get out of the way.” she said and pushed me aside.
I stared at her while she stormed inside my room. She walked to and fro, flipped my beddings and my pillows. And what happened next made my jaw open and my eyes widen with shock.
The diamond necklace was there.
Crap, I couldn’t steal one thing. Could this be a frame-up? Or if it was, I knew the person to blame. This is just a childish prank, I believe.
“Then, what’s this?” she asked and held it in her right hand.
“No, this can’t be. I wouldn’t do that. No!” I whined.
Angela looked at me like I was the most terrible criminal in the whole world. She believed in the lie her daughter had made to blow me off.
Well, Sandra won the game. I guess I just have to accept that I was on the right age to go to jail.
"I know you’re innocent, friend. I believe you.” Jean whispered.
I had barely mumbled my thanks to her when Angela spoke.
“I already called the police. They’re here now.”
Police?
Angela had called the police to arrest me, and four of them came. I tried to explain to her the truth but she didn’t listened. I felt so poor to myself. She believed in the lie her daughter had made. One of the policemen were familiar to me, like I had seen him someplace before. Or maybe I saw him last night…was it?
When I saw his face, my jaw propped open.
Leighton Stevens.
The man I blamed for my son’s death, the one who beat up my son until he crossed the street and was hit by the motorcycle.
He came here to arrest me.
While Angela was talking to them, Leighton came and put handcuffs on my wrists.
“Time to go to jail, miss.” he said and flashed his devilish grin.
Crap, I hated him much than last night. He dragged me out of the place just the time that Angela had finished her business with Leighton’s colleagues.
I wondered where Sean was. He hadn’t come home to rescue me. Well, I knew that he would believe his sister if ever he was here.
We arrived at the jail a couple of minutes later.I was placed inside a high-tech modern prison cell. Leighton even pushed me inside and locked the gate using a four-number code.
He stared at me and then sighed.
“Like mother, like son.” he mumbled.
“What? Can you please repeat what you said?” I responded with an angry voice.
“Oh, nothing.” He said in a teasing tone.
“Get me out of here. I’m not supposed to be here.” I said.
“Oh yes, you deserve this. You really do.” he said.
By the way he said it, I would have punched him. It sounded so irritating to me.
“Tell me, why are you so mean to me?” I asked him after a minute of silence.
“Why? Because at first I thought you were so innocent. But then, I knew you were such a terrible criminal. So, you deserve to be here, bitch.”
I pouted my mouth and clenched my fist. Three, two…my patience was running out. I’d definitely kill him now.
“Do you think so?” I said with pure sarcasm.
He nodded and smiled, the monstrous one.
“You’ll be there forever. Remember that.”
Ouch, I was disheartened. I don’t deserve this fate. I want to get out of this living hell.
We were both quiet again, and half a minute later we heard a motorcycle stop outside.
