I sat in the back of the room in all my classes. That was usual. But on this particular day, I couldn't focus on math, or English, or history, or chemistry, or Portuguese. Last night I had spontaneously gone to a rave, had an incredibly sucky time, and then seen the most beautiful woman EVER. Then this mysterious woman vanished, leaving me a patchouli-scented poem that was shockingly true.
I was now carrying said poem around, folded up in my pocket. For almost the first hour of the day, all I could smell was patchouli. But after awhile I couldn't smell it anymore. But I could always feel the weight of it. Strange that a little piece of paper could be so heavy.
I was glad that my last class of the day was art. I could just sit by myself, listen to my iPod, and paint.
I got to class early, took my usual seat at the table in the back, and took out the project I was currently working on. After choosing a playlist on my iPod that consisted of obscure music by The Mars Volta, Lords of Acid, and from the Silent Hill soundtrack, I got right to work. Painting was the one thing that could always distract me from whatever was going on in my life.
But not even painting could distract me from what was about to be going on in my life.
Since I was early to class, people continued to trickle in for the next five or ten minutes. It was art class; nobody bothered much to be on time. I ignored them and they ignored me, as usual. But then someone sat down next to me.
At first, I didn't do anything; nobody ever sat next to me. But after awhile, they didn't move, and I could feel them staring at me. I took a deep breath, and that's when I smelled it: patchouli perfume. I slowly looked up in utter disbelief, taking off my headphones. Because sitting next to me, in my art class, was the mysterious girl from last night. Only today, she looked much different. Her hair was pulled back in something resembling both a ponytail and a bun. She wore a silver locket around her neck, a plain grey t-shirt, and blue jeans. She wasn't wearing any sort of makeup other than lip gloss, but she still wore the combat boots. There were simple silver studs in her earlobes. It was as if she were a completely different person, but I was certain it was her. I would recognize her anywhere.
"Hello! I'm Raven," she said, smiling at me. Her smile was breathtaking. She didn't have perfectly white teeth, and one of them was slightly twisted, but her smile was still warm and inviting. It was one of those smiles that involves your whole face, not just your mouth.
I couldn't help it. I smiled back. "Hi, Raven. I'm Evie."
Her gaze drifted down to my painting, and her eyes lit up. "Wow, that's beautiful! How did you get those colors? There's not much to chose from over there," she gestured to the open cabinet where the paint supplies were.
I smirked. "Mixing colors is kinda my thing. I like a challenge. All I use originally is red, white, blue, and yellow. Then I just make whatever color I want from those. Theoretically it's simple, but it takes lots of practice."
Raven shook her head. "That's amazing. I have trouble making a decent shade of grey, and that's pretty much as simple as it gets..." She looked back at me again. "Maybe sometime you could teach me how to do that. Mix colors." Last night, I had been right about her eyes. They were green. I found myself getting lost in them... then I realized I hadn't responded.
"Mhmm," I mumbled, nodding.
She smiled again, and her eyes flashed. "I'm new around here, by the way. What sort of stuff do you do for fun? I mean, besides go to raves?"
I chuckled. "Well, I don't usually do stuff like that. It was a spur-of-the-moment thing. As for things to do around here... not much. There's an old movie theatre, they show movies that have already come out of theatres but haven't come out on DVD yet. They also show like independent films. It's a pretty cool place. And if you can drive, there's a decent mall in the next town over. But other than that, it's pretty boring around here. What's it like where you moved from?"
Raven got a look as if she were gazing into the distance. "Oh, it wasn't much better..." she trailed off and for a second or two we sat in silence. Then she snapped back, as if waking up from a dream. "Anyway, that theatre sounds fun. Do you have any plans tonight?" Her eyes widened, increasing their hypnotic effect on me. I felt like I was falling into those deep green pools of light.
"Nope. No plans," I said quietly.
"Good. Pick me up at seven," she said as she wrote down her address and cell phone number on half a sheet of torn notebook paper.
