Chapter 6
I opened my eyes and felt different from all of the other days, happy. It had been so long since I’ve been happy. Even at home, I was never really happy.
I got up and got dressed in a plain green button up shirt, and black flare sweatpants.
When I went into the other room, I saw Rode sitting in the chair next to where I usually sit. I got my food and sat next to him. He smiled.
Every one looked at us very suspiciously, and then Andia brought up the private session with the gamemakers and everything changed. No one was looking at us anymore, I wasn’t happy anymore, and I definitely was not starving anymore.
“So what are you guys planning on doing?” Marina asked us both.
“Well, I was going to make a spear and throw it.” Rode said. Marina nodded and pointed at me.
“I am going to throw a knife.”
“I get to work with you to help get ready for the interviews tomorrow.” Andia said to me.
Oh, my gosh. I completely forgot about the interviews. The announcers would ask us simple questions and we’d answer them to get sponsors.
It is a really stressful time, because you have train with your escort for hours.
After breakfast I went to my room to take a shower. After I got out I thought it wouldn’t be a bad idea to see Rode.
He was in his room making his bed.
“You know they have servants to make your bed.” I said.
“Yea, well, I’m used to doing everything myself, living in the poor part of District 5.”
“Oh” I said and walked to the couch. “ I had totally forgot about the interviews.”
“Me, too.”
I heard Andia scream that we had to leave NOW! We both ran to the door. They took us downstairs and we had to wait on benches to be called.
It took around 2 hours before I was finally called.
“Good luck!” Rode called after me.
“You, too.” I said back.
The gamemakers looked mad. They had poker faces. Showing no one what they thought.
I grabbed 3 of the hundreds of knifes they had. I got to where they had marked with tape and threw the first knife. It stuck right in the middle of the dummies forehead. The second hit the hip and the third hit right in the heart.
I was very proud of myself, I put my head high but when I looked at them they did not seem impressed. I then got upset. They told me I could go now so I went upstairs.
I went into my room until Rode came in.
“Are you okay?’’ He said as he walked in.
“Yea, you?” I asked.
“Good, got a bulls eye every time.”
“Well ill just say I don’t think ill get a good grade.”
“You don’t want to talk about it?” He asked.
“No.” He usually respects my decision and he did this time, too.
We sat there for a while laughing about all of the crazy people we’ve met since we’ve been here. Then, Andia came in and pushed him out so she could work with me. She first got me to put on high heels, which I had never worn before. Then put on a long dress, which I had never worn before. Lastly make a pretend speech, which I had never done before. I mean, for god sake, I’m 15, I’m not supposed to go through this yet.
When she let me go I ran into the other room grabbed 3 cookies from the cabinet and sat next to Rode. He was laughing at me rubbing my feet.
Then the whole prep team came bursting in through the doors, screaming,
“The scores, The scores!”
Rode immediately turned on the TV and we started watching. Person after person came on no one below a 5, actually, Demetria got an 11. Then it was District 5 turn.
“Rode Smythe…9” Everyone clapped.
Then it was my turn.
“Lily Green…4”
