Chapter 7

Everyone was quiet. Rode grabbed my hand. I shook my head and he let go.

I ran to my room and shut the door. Rode opened the door and came in without asking. He went to me and hugged me.

“ I thought this whole time. ‘Oh, well at least I have the private session. Ill do good on that’ and I didn’t. There’s no point in even trying now.”

“Yes, there is, don’t say that.” He said.

“I want some warm milk, like the kind my mother used to make on my birthday.” I said starting to cry, thinking about home.

He laid me down on the bed and started to leave.

“Wait, don’t leave!” I called after him.

“Ill be right back.” He said.

My own mom wouldn’t have done this for me and yet someone I hardly knew before 4 days ago does it.

Rode came back with something in his hands. A mug.

“I brought you back some warm milk. It’s the kind my mother makes when we’re sick.” He said thoughtfully.

Then I couldn’t stop the tears from pouring. I don’t think boys understand why girls cry.

“Are you okay! What’s wrong!?!” He asked, looking very concerned.

“No one has ever treated me like this before. Not even my mother.” I said still sobbing.

He gave me the mug and rubbed my head.

“Go to sleep.” He said.

“Don’t leave.” I pleaded.

“I wont.”

I put my head down and waited there until I fell asleep. My dreams were pretty much the same all of the time. I start, I walk until I get hit, and I die. It happens over and over again until I finally wake up.

When I actually woke up, I found Rode in a chair with his head on the mattress.

“Rode! Wake up!” I yelled.

He looked really confused when he got up. He left me to get ready and then I told him he could come back in.

“What are you planning to say at the interviews?” He asked.

“Oh, just how much I hate them all.“ I said sarcastically.

“Yea, same here.” He laughed.

“Should I talk in a capitol accent.” I did my best imitation.

I started laughing so hard I fell to the ground and he laughed at me laughing.

Andia came in and yelled at us.

“WHY ARE YOU TWO LAUGHING WHEN WE ARE ABOUT TO DO INTERVIEWS THAT WILL DECIDE YOUR FATE!!!!!”

It took us a minute to get back to normal. Andia went over all over these drills for the interviews. She told us to go downstairs to the training room because they wanted to check on how we did.

We went downstairs and waited in line to get our results. I had gained a pound of muscle. Then came Rode, turns out he gained 5 pounds of muscle. I’ve never heard of anyone who could gain muscle that fast.

“Not too shabby.” I said as he walked to me.

“Yea, well you didn’t do too bad either.”

Just then Demetria came up.

“Eww, are you two like a thing or something. You could do soo much better Rode, I mean, How is it possible to get a 4.”

“Back off, Demetria!” He said.

“What are you going to do about it, small muscles!”

Just then I couldn’t take it. All of the anger that had been held in my body was thrown out. I then jumped on top of her and started punching. I should have thought about her strength before I did. She specializes in hand to hand combat. Her punches were excruciating. They burned my face but I didn’t back off. I kept punching until they finally pulled me off of her.

Rode grabbed me.

“Why would you do that?!?”

“Because she insulted you!”

“I don’t care about that!”

The peacekeepers kept yelling at me and they yelled for me to go upstairs and that they would inform my prep team.

Rode helped me walk because I was so dizzy and could hardly walk. Rode kept informing me that everything was okay and that I wouldn’t be in trouble but I could hardly listen because my eye was swelling up really bad. Right when we got upstairs he set me on the couch and ran to the other room to get me some ice.

Then Andia walked in.

“WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!!!!!!!!!’’ She screamed at me.

“I’m sorry, please I really am sorry!” I cried.

“NO, YOUR NOT SORRY!!!”

“Lay off of her okay!” Rode yelled

Andia rolled her eyes and walked to the other room. Rode came and sat next to me.

“Don’t let anyone tell you that you did wrong, you did what you thought was right.”

He turned on the TV and the news came on. “The Gossip with Ceaser Flickerman”

“People watch really stupid shows in the capitol.” Rode joked.

“Coming up,” said Ceaser Flickerman. “The catfight between the two girl tributes from District 4 and 5.”

And that’s when I started screaming.
