Chapter 20

It was warm outside. The sun warmed my skin. I hadn’t felt any warmth in the last 2 weeks. I felt nice. I knew that Rode’s family didn’t have much money so I went by the bakery to get some bread.

As I walked in, the owner rushed to me.

“Its so nice to meet you. Im very proud to say that the victor this year was from my district!” He said, shaking my hand.

“Thank you, very much. Um, can I get 2 loafs of raisin bread and 4 sugar cookies?” I decided to get something for the kids, some of them were as old as me but who doesn’t like cookies.

I headed to his house after I got the food. It took around 15 minutes so get there and finally I found the house Rode described. It was torn up in the front and the only thing happy was a little flower. I walked up the broken sidewalk and knocked on the door. Rode answered.

“Hello.” I said.

“Hi. Sorry about the house. Its no victors village.”

“I love it.”

He smiled and kissed me. He brought me in the house to a kitchen full with his family laughing, joking, and smiling. They looked happier then my mother and I ever looked.

When his mother saw me she went over to me.

“Its so nice to see you when your not in a airplane bed. Wow! You are beautiful!” She said. I blushed. Rode laughed.

I showed her the bread and she was so exited she kissed me on the cheek. I gave his siblings the cookies. The older ones thanked me and his little sister, who’s 6, face lit up and she started screaming.

His mother started the oven and while we were waiting for the bread to be warmed up, Rode showed me to his room.

It was plain, with a small bed in the corner of the room. The bed had a brown quilt on it and a chicken feather pillow. Chicken feathers were popular in our district because we had a lot of chickens.

I sat on his bed and he sat on the floor next to me.

“I love your family. They are all so fun.” I said.

“Yea. Well they get kind of annoying when your with them most of the day.”

I laughed. I sometimes wished I had more people in my family. His mother called us in and we sat at the table.

There were plates already prepared with chicken bacon and bread. I took a bite and realized where Rode got his cooking skills from. It was delicious. The chicken was juicy and the bread soft. I finished after everyone had and they chatted for a while.

We went into the living room and sat on the 3 makeshift couches. I sat next to Rode and talked to his 16 year old sister, Lauren, about what I thought about the new clothes I got. She turned out to be a girly girl too. Then we heard the door knock.

Rode and I opened the door to a peacekeeper.

“Are you Rode Smythe?” A muscular man said.

“Yes.” said Rode nervously.

“Someone has found that your still alive in the capitol.”
