Chapter 14

I was crying and I think my tears were freezing. It was so cold. No one would ever find me. I was sitting in the snow, trying to cover up with anything I could.

Then I heard a noise. Rode!

“Oh my god, Lily! You had me so worried.” He said running towards me.

“I’m……sorry.” I said still crying.

“Don’t apologize.” He said.

He picked me up and carried me back to the bush. Turns out I was really far away too.

He put me down.

“Go to sleep.” He said.

“No.”

“So now you’re being stubborn.” He said.

“Yes, I’m cold and sad. I don’t want to go to sleep. I want to go home.” I said.

“Well why don’t you close your eyes and imagine home.” He said, rubbing my head.

I closed my eyes and didn’t realize how tired I was. I soon fell asleep and slept for a long time. When I woke up the sun was already halfway up.

“Why didn’t you wake me up?” I asked.

“Because you looked peaceful.” He said.

“This cold is so tiring, do you know how many people are left?”

“Apparently there’s only ten left.”

“I’m tired of this place. I just want to go home with you.”

“I don’t think you understand how much I wish that too.”

I sat there thinking for a moment.

“I’m kind of hungry.” I said.

“Okay, what do you want?”

“Did you bring my bag?”

“Yes, What do you want out of it?”

“My raisins.”

He went through my bag and pulled out the box of raisins. There wasn’t much left. I got 3 and put the rest in my bag. I ate them.

We decided to go hunting so I could show him my hunting skills. I grabbed my slingshot and limped outside. We walked for a while, then I saw a squirrel in the tree and shot it right in the eye.

“Wow! That’s really good!” He said, pleasantly surprised.

“Thank you!” I said. “Living in the poor part of District 5 really teaches you how to hunt doesn’t it.”

“Yea.”

We went back to the bush and sat there for a moment.

“I want my moms food.” I said.

Just then, a gift from a sponsor came. I ran to open it. Food! Two servings. It was from my mother too. It had milk, bread, and cheese. This must have cost a fortune.

“Thank you, mom!” I said.

Rode came over and I gave him a serving. He asked if I wanted some of his when I said no he put some on my plate anyway.

“Thank you.” I said.

“No problem.”

We sat in silence for a while and finished our food. Then I heard a noise, Rode heard it too. He got up and so did I.

Demitria popped out of nowhere. She threw a knife at me and Rode stepped in front of it.
