Chapter 12

I continued to throw up and he kept rubbing my head. He was so nice. I wasn’t very worried because I know that if I did happen to die I would be happy.

After a few minutes I stopped and Rode looked at me as if I was already dead.

“I’m ok-” He cut me off.

“No your not okay because your throwing up now and I fell completely useless to you.”

“Don’t think that! You have been more help than anybody in the world has.”

I said.

Luckily I threw up outside of the bush so we don’t have to worry about moving. He was really worried, you could tell by the look in his eyes.

“I think you have a serious concussion. Did you hit your head when you fell?”

“From what I remember, I think I may have, I felt a pain on the back of my head but then she cut me so I really wasn’t concentrated about that.”

He turned my head and found a dent.

“I think you hit your head on a rock. You should get some sleep.”

I laid down and he patted my head. I finally fell asleep but I did have the worst dream I have ever had. Rode left me, he didn’t even say goodbye. I must have been making noise because a second later he woke me up.

“Are you okay?” He said.

“I’m a mess.”

“Did you have a bad dream?”

“Yes, I had a dream that you left me! I don’t want you to do that.” I said starting to cry.

“I’m not going to leave you. I love you.”

“Me, too.”

I went back to sleep and felt a little bit better when I woke up. It was still dark and he was asleep but I couldn’t go back to sleep.

I heard something outside. I woke Rode up.

“What’s wrong?” He said sitting up.

“I hear a noise outside.” I said really worried.

Right when I said that he ran outside. I heard him talking so I ran outside with a knife. It was the girl from district 3.

“I heard you weren’t dead so I came here to finish you off.” She said.

“You wont touch her.” Rode said blocking me.

Nobody had seen my knife yet and I had an idea.

“No, Rode, let her come at me.” Rode looked at me like I was crazy and then I gave him a slight nod.

She ran at me and I took the knife from behind my back and stuck it into her stomach.

She looked me surprised at first, and then she calmly closed her eyes and dropped to the floor.

I think I was traumatized. It didn’t feel good to kill somebody. Knowing that someone out there somewhere hated me because I killed their daughter.

When the canon boomed for the mark of her death, I fell to the floor. Rode came and helped me up.

“It wasn’t your fault. She tried to kill you, What else would you have done?” He asked.

“Let her kill me.” He frowned.

“No matter what happens, you have to promise me you will not let someone kill you.”

“I promise.”

“Lets get you inside.”

I still had trouble walking so he helped me in. The sunrise was coming over the horizon so he went outside to make breakfast and I sat half in the bush and half out so I could talk to him.

“Well, you knew you were going to have to kill somebody sooner or later.”

“Yea, but I thought it would be later. I don’t think I was ready.”

The body was still there.

“We have to move don’t we, so they can get the body?” He asked, just now realizing it.

“Yea.” I tried to get up but it didn’t work very well so he came and helped me walk.

I limped around 10 minutes away and we saw the aircraft come and lift the body.

I started imagining to family planning the funeral and got even more upset.

We walked back to the place and Rode gave me the food. It was squirrel.

“What if we are the last 2 and-” Rode cut me off.

“Then we will wait until I die naturally.” Rode answered.

“Why does it have it always have to be you?”

“Because I cant even think of letting you die.”

I got up, all of my pains no longer a worry, and kissed him.
