"Geez, Ave. How much stuff do you have in there?" I ask as my friend, Avery, piles another text book into my hands and carries on rifling through her locker.

Her muffled reply comes from deep inside the locker. “I’m almost done."

She hands me another book and I’m forced to lay the load down on the floor because the weight is too much. “What is all this stuff anyway?" I sift through all the books that have been used over the whole four years Avery’s been here. The titles on the books range from Year 9 Science to Year 12 Practice Physics. Unlike every other student here at Westlake, it looks like Avery keeps all her school books.

"Stupid school books," she mumbles, dropping another two books onto the load. I notice that the top book reads Year 13 Chemistry. I pick it up.

"Avery, don’t you need this?"

She looks at me and her face flushes red. “Oh, shit." She grabs it from my hands and giggles. “Maybe, huh?"

I roll my eyes.

"I don’t even know why I took Chemistry," she sighs, tossing out more books. “The class is horrible."

I shrug. “I kind of find it fun." Chemistry had always fascinated me, for some unknown reason. I like knowing how things work, and how they react with each other. It’s like one step closer to understanding people.

"Ugh," she replies. “Don’t see how." She buries her head back into her locker. “How many books out there now?"

I do a quick head count. “Ten. What’s the point of all this?"

She emerges from her locker and looks at me as if I’m absolutely mad - a look she gives me a lot. Although it should really be the other way round. When people see a small crazy red curly haired girl powering towards them yelling at the top of her voice they don’t exactly think she’s mellow. Avery is the definition of ‘mad’. “I’m cleaning out my locker," she says, absolutely dead panned.

"Yes, but why now?" I try and offer a smile to all the students walking past us that give us weird looks. When Avery asked me to hang out with her during our study period, this isn’t exactly what I thought she meant.

"Well," she puts her hands on her hips and blows a stray piece of hair away from her face, “my locker was getting out of control. And, like, I couldn’t even put stuff I wanted to put in there inside, because all of the stuff I didn’t want was in there. So, like, I just thought it was time for a clean out." A small photograph flutters to her feet and she bends over to pick it up before gasping. “I thought I had lost this!" She shows me a photo of her and Niall from about two years ago that was taken just after they starting dating. She kisses the photo before sticking it on the inside of her locker, along with all her other photos of her and Niall. I’m pretty sure I took all of those photos, and not once was I asked to be in them.

Suddenly, as if he has some sensual monitor that alerts him whenever Avery’s thinking about him - which would be always, Niall comes sauntering around the corner towards us. “Hey, Vi!" He calls, before picking up Avery in his arms and kissing her lightly. “Hey, gorgeous."

I stand there awkwardly as Avery and Niall continue to hug and kiss and talk to each other as if they haven’t seen each other in years, but really they only saw each other last period.

"You eaten?" I hear Niall ask her.

"Nope. You?"

"Just about to get something." He threads his fingers through hers. “Come on."
