Maka's POV
Soul was beyond freaking out. He was grumbling and angrily cursing to himself basically breaking down.
"Where could he be?" Tsubaki asked worriedly while walking back and forth.
"I'm sure he's just with Hilary." I hissed bitterly at Soul. He glared in response.
"It would be even worse if he was!"
That shocked me. "Why is that?"
"She's . . . not right . . ."
"No, I mean she's your fiance, she wouldn't be right for Black Star." I grumbled.
Soul rubbed his face, "No, Maka. That's not it. She isn't right in the head. She's crazy and I didn't think she'd still be here after I broke off the engagement."
That's when Kid joined the conversation.
"You broke off the engagement?" He asked.
Soul nodded and continued to pace. "A couple months--no--a year after I joined the DWMA I called home and told them I wasn't getting married and I wasn't going to go home. I got my own place and they'd never here from me again. I never planned on coming back either . . ." Soul trailed off.
"But. . . you came back . . . why?" Liz cut in sitting back in a chair.
Soul didn't answer. Instead he looked up at the clock above the door. "I need to go. It's gonna be too late if I wait much longer and I'd rather finish up my meeting tonight rather than wait another day."
"What are you talking about, Soul!?" I shouted. He continued to ignore me though. Without another word I pulled out my book.
"MAKA CHOP!"
Soul was on the ground holding his head that was spouting blood.
"Dang it, Maka! What was that for?!" He demanded.
I crossed my arms and looked away. "If you're gonna ignore me I'm gonna ignore you."
"Don't be so uncool, Maka."
"You're the one being uncool, Soul! You're pushing me out of your life, again!"
"I'm not-"
"Sure, 'you're not'. You're just not letting me help you or even offer encouragement or words of advice. You're just not letting me HELP YOU!"
"Shut up, Maka!" Soul snapped. "Fine. If you want to be bitter about me wanting my personal space, fine. I don't care." He turned his attention to Kid.
"Kid, make sure everyone stays in this room, and if you can help it, don't talk to anyone here. No matter how rude you find it . . . you can't speak to any of my family members. They have a twisted way of getting the information they want and they aren't afraid to use that information against you." Soul looked at the clock once more. "I need to go . . . talk with someone. Then I'll find Black Star . . . then we'll all leave and hopefully never come back."
With that Soul left the room. Leaving me angrier than heck.
I flopped down onto a padded chair in the far corner of the room. "How dare he talk to me like that?!" I growled.
Tsubaki sat next to me. "Are you okay, Maka?" She asked.
With a shrug, I responded, "Yeah. . . it . . . just makes mad that Soul doesn't trust me. I mean, I've always been there for him . . . why won't he just lean on me for a while and confide in me."
Patty came over and laughed. "That's not how Soul is though!" She giggled again, "He doesn't want you to worry about him or get involved in his life because he's embarrassed and of the fact that he can't handle his own problems and be the 'cool man' he's always wanted to be."
Everyone stared at Patty shocked.
"Okay, how-" Maka started, but Patty turned around and started repainting an expensive looking piece of art to look like a giraffe.
"Patty's right. He doesn't want you to worry Maka." Tsubaki continued on.
"It really was wrong of us to follow him in retrospect." Kid added.
"THEN WHY'D YOU SUGGEST IT?!?" I screeched pulling my book out.
"Because you would've gone on your own and Soul wouldn't be happy with us if we left you to fend for yourself no matter how strong you are. It was either you go by yourself or we go with you." Kid explained looking bored.
I became silent. "I should apologize, huh?"
"Maybe." Liz agreed flippantly.
"I hope everything really does work-"
I was interrupted by a knock on the door.
Soul's POV:
I was so furious with Maka for coming. Couldn't she just trust me for once?! I've learned my lesson on not telling her when it's serious, but this . . . this is my LIFE, my PAST! She has no business here.
I walked down the familiar hallways until I came to the large oak door that my grandma requested. She was an amazing musician. She was who started this family, but it wasn't like she wanted it to go to my messed up parents' heads.
I knocked on the door. Needless to say I was nervous, I hadn't called her, sent her a letter, no contact whatsoever once I left. I was afraid she'd be mad at me.
I was afraid she'd push me away, the last bit of family that I still loved. The last one that might have still accepted me.
Would she really hate me?
"Come in." A soft voice called out after a moment. I opened the door.
"SOUL!" The voice cried cheerfully.
"Grammy!" I smiled brightly. To be honest, it felt quite childish, not like a 'cool man', but a pathetic boy once I saw her.
She had definitely aged. She had been blonde at one time in her life, but the last time I saw her the gray had mostly taken over, now her hair was completely gray and her wrinkles overgrown. Her tall strong demeanor had shrunk with her. Her appearance wasn't what made me stop, but the fact that she was laying in her bed with a million medical appliances all around her.
With the machines there and her ghostly look . . . I was glad I came before it was too late . . . she didn't look like she could make it through the night let alone the next few days.
"Don't just stand there, Soul." She whispered gesturing for me to go to her. I ignored that childish feeling I got and simply ran to her, collapsing to my knees at her side.
She wrapped her arms around me and held on tight, I wasn't quite sure when I started crying, but soon enough her entire shoulder was wet and covered in snot.
"Hello, my cool little man." She joked. "I'm so glad you came back." She pulled me tighter.
"I'm so sorry I haven't been back-" I started, but she shh'd me.
"Let's not talk about that, I don't blame you, but lets talk about that school of yours! What made you so much stronger?"
I looked up at her smiling face and I couldn't help but smile back. Without further hesitation I told her everything from the day I first entered into the academy up until I came back home.
After a little while of silence she giggled a little bit.
"So you really like this girl." She gently nudged me.
I blushed, but nodded.
