An Item For Greed:
Chapter 7- Aftermath
As darkness once again claimed the sky, Castor closed his eyes and let sleep take him for its own.
*
Castor awoke early, only to find a large crowd of villagers watching him. Blinking a few times, he slowly sat up, and shook the sand from his hair. Next to him, he saw Sam do the same. Castor glared at the onlookers for a moment, then he abruptly stood up.
Quietly, he heard a small child say, “You killed the monsters. Are they gone forever?”
Castor nodded and then said, “I hope so.”
“But how?” the child asked him in a small voice.
“This,” Castor told the child. He then stepped towards the fountain. On the ground beside it, he brushed away a few grains of sand that were on the pavement. Then he knocked three times on the ground. Three loud clangs sounded as his reply. He then knocked three times on the fountain, and the same loud clang rung through the air.
“This isn’t just ordinary stone,” he told the crowd. Sam stopped tying his shoe to listen to Castor's reasoning. “In fact, this isn't even stone, its iron. Its a metal, and its stronger than stone,” Castor then paused and looked at the awe on the crowds faces. “And this,” Castor said, while looking into the now empty basin. “This fountain was filled with a watered down oil. That is why it shimmers in the sunlight, it is highly flammable,” he paused and took a deep breath and then said, “This rock,” he told them, while holding up the two rock halves. “We used this rock to create sparks, and we lit the oil on fire, and the fire burned the monsters, but yet it didn’t hurt us,” taking another deep breath, Castor finished with, “And because of this fountain, we killed the monsters.”
The crowd broke into applause when Castor had finished his story. They cheered and congratulated Castor and Sam. Sam then stood up, and pulled Castor to the side. “How did you know about the iron?” Sam asked Castor.
“When that monster attacked you, and you fell onto the fountain, your shoes made sparks when they scratched the ground. I figured that it was some kind of metal, but I found out that it was only the fountain, and a few feet of ground surrounding it,” Castor replied plainly. “That's why when you walk through out the city, your footsteps don’t make that clanging sound,” Castor told Sam.
“So its just the fountain, and the ground beside it that are made of metal?” Sam asked, unsure about the answer.
“Yes, just as you said,” Castor answered him.
Sam Paused for a moment before continuing with his question, “But how did you know about the oil?”
“Well, when we first walked into the city, I could smell it, but it got stronger whenever I was near the fountain,” Castor told Sam.
“Oh,” was all Sam said, before they were pulled back into the celebrations that the monsters were gone.
