Chapter 18- travelling
Sam awoke late the next morning. By the looks of the sun, it was nearing noon. Sam looked over his shoulder at the still sleeping form of his friend. After waking Castor up, Sam dug around in the rucksack, until at the very bottom, he found some slightly spoiled fruit- but when you’re hungry, who cares if it’s a little soft. Having eaten, Sam and Castor saddled up their horses, and began the long trip quickly, trying to make up for the time that they lost while sleeping.
By mid afternoon, Sam and Castor were just nearing the halfway mark between the Red Cap Mountains, and Casliton. All in all, it was a three day journey on horseback, but it would’ve taken more than a week if they had gone on foot. About four hours into their trek, they passed a street vendor on his way to Amarack. They purchased several food items from him; including fruit, and dried meat. With food in hand, they continued on their merry way rushing along the momentous packed dirt road.
When sundown approached, it became dark very suddenly. The sun had just been beginning to set when it became dark. It was as if someone had thrown a great quilt over the sun, blocking it’s light and warmth from reaching both the realm of Kapontralyn, and all of those that inhabited it. Sam and Castor walked their horses off, and away from the road, and into a ditch where they settled in for the night.
When the waking dawn sun rose the next morning, it rose in the same manner that it set last light. In one blinding flash, the world went from total darkness, to a brilliant awakening sunlight. When Castor’s eyes finally adjusted to the bright light, he wiped the sleep from his eyes, and went to wake Sam. When he got to where Sam had slept last night, he quickly found that he was no longer there. With worry setting in, Castor called out Sam’s name three times. Not once did he get an answer. Shock waves of abandonment swept through Castor as memories of his father forced there way into his mind. With him, Sam had taken both of their horses, and the rucksack. Castor both felt, and now was truly alone.
