An Item For Greed:

Chapter 6- Burning Flesh

All of the surrounding creatures sniggered at what the lead monster had said. They all muttered their agreement, saying, “Stupid human,” over and over again. Grinning again, the leading creature stepped forward, towards Castor and Sam.

“Why are you in our territory?” It asked them, its voice slurring slightly. “Our home is the night, and you are intruding,” It snarled at Castor and Sam.

“Okay, we'll just leave then,” Sam Stuttered, backing slowly towards the fountain.

“Halt where you stand!” the creature shouted at Sam, who immediately stopped in his tracks. “You are intruding in our home- the darkness. You must either be punished, or become or meal,” the monster told them simply, grinning darkly.

Sam looked over at Castor, and saw a worried look in his eye. “Fine, we'll be,” Castor began to say. Castor was cut short, when from beside him he heard a muffled scream. He looked past his shoulder, and saw that the monster from behind them had launched itself at Sam. One of its claws were covering its mouth, while the other was scrapping desperately at his throat. Its arms were around his neck, and its feet were tearing at Sam's sides. The monster had attacked Sam's back, and it was still trying to rip open his jugular vein.

Tripping into an open hole, Sam slipped backwards into the fountain and kicking up a few sparks with his shoes as he fell, slamming the creature on the edge of the basin. It cried out in pain, but only tried harder to kill Sam. Sam grabbed hold of its boney, bloodied wrists and tried to pull the creature off of him. All of the monsters hissed at the sight, and shielded their eyes from the sparks, as though they would burn them.

Noticing the sparks, castor realized that they were slightly strange, and out of place. He scuffed his shoes on the ground, and smiled at the tiny sparks that flew up around his feet. Smiling to himself, Castor looked up and saw that Sam had pulled the monster off of his back. All of the creatures were now crowding around Sam and Castor, hoping to get a meal out of the intruders. Sam's back was bleeding heavily from impact with the fountain. Absentmindedly, Castor scuffed his shoes on the pavement again, as he watched the monsters grow closer. And then it clicked.

They were monsters of darkness. With sparks you could make fire. Fire is light. The monsters hate light. The sparks were the key, the weapon. They could kill the monsters.

Realization dawned on Castor, and he looked at the ground. Several feet away, lied a small, sharp rock, but it was in between a pair of creatures. Seeing this as his only chance, Castor ran at the monsters that were on either side of the rock. Surprised at this sudden attack, they lunged at him, one of there long claws slicing open the flesh on his forearm. Castor snatched the rock from between them, wincing in pain as he did so. Back in the center of the circle, with rock in hand, Castor threw the rock at the ground, breaking it in two, causing a few sparks to jump up. As the rock collided with the ground, a loud clang sounded. The monsters scrambled back a couple of paces in fright of the sparks.

Castor stooped down, and picked up the two halves. He tossed one to Sam, who caught it, and looked puzzled at Castor. Castor grinned, and struck the fountains basin with the rock. Hundreds of sparks jumped away from the rock, and the creatures scrambled back a few more steps. Sensing what they were about to do, the lead monster ran at Castor, trying to grate his skin with its claws.

“Get the sparks in the basin!” Castor shouted at Sam. Doing as he was told, Sam smashed the rock into the basin, trying to get a spark to land in the pool.

Finally, one landed in it. The moment that the spark hit the surface, the pool was ablaze. Flames shot up out of the basin, and reached out at the monsters, burning away their flesh, disintegrating their bones. The lead monster yelped in horror, and released Castor, before being burned to ash, becoming one with the ground, yet again.

The moment that the last monster was killed, all of the holes refilled themselves with dirt, the fire put itself out completely. Apart from lingering smoke, the night was still and silent once again.
