Chapter 4- Malicious Huntsmen.
Later in the day, nearing noon; Castor and Sam approached the tall wrought iron gates of Amarack. Iron was woven in and out of the main gate for both stability, and protection. Supporting the gate were two large stone pillars, topped with large reptilian gargoyles. Their stone faces sneered menacing at anyone trying to get through the gates. They were about four feet tall, and had large claws in the place of hands. Pointed fangs could be seen in the corners of their mouths, as if they were hungry for their next meal. An altitinous stone wall arched its way around the whole city, acting like a protective barrier.
Sam glanced over at Castor who was standing on his left, and shrugged his shoulders. He then stepped up to the gate, and attempted to pull it open. Nothing happened. Sam tried again to open the gate, but alas, nothing happened. “Why wont it open?” Sam called over his should to Castor.
“Because you haven’t asked it to,” said an unfamiliar voice. Slowly Sam turned around, and saw that Castor was looking up. He too looked over head, and saw one of the statues shake its plated head. It then sat up on its hind legs and stretched out its long scaled wings. Flexing its claws, it grinned maliciously at them, showing its sharp fangs.
“Did it just speak?” Sam asked Castor, who merely nodded his head.
“Need only ask if you wish to enter,” said the other gargoyle. “But to enter we need only to ask,” it continued.
“To enter you must have good reason, or else you may be convicted of treason,” stated the first gargoyle in a singsong voice. “But first state your being, and we'll quit blabbing.”
“Though beware of the price, thieving will pay,” finished the other statue. Then just as Castor was going to ask what ti meant, the gates swung open.
“What in bloody hell was that all about!” Sam yelled over at Castor, who shrugged.
“Well hurry up and get inside before we close the gates!” the gargoyle spoke again. Castor nodded in acknowledgement, and hurried through the gates, Sam following closely behind him.
Flanking the stone pillars on the inside of the gates, was a long row of huntsmen and soldiers. The huntsmen were each equipped with Ash longbows, and a quiver full of arrows. The soldiers each held a grey steel longsword and shield. They formed a long narrow isle, and as Castor and Sam walked down it, the huntsmen all drew an arrow into their bow. They shot glares at Sam and Castor as they walked past, their eyes were like daggers plunging into the backs of their skulls.
As they neared the end of the long row, they noticed a guard was blocking their way. He was wearing a set of heavy gold chain mail. On his left and right were more huntsmen, each looking just as menicing as the one flanking it.
“Name?” the guard asked them.
“My name is Castor, and this is Sam,” he told the guard.
“Purpose?” asked the guard.
“To get supplies,” Castor told him.
“For what reason?”asked the guard.
“What are those gargoyles for?” Sam asked, butting into their conversation before Castor could reply.
“They are the gate guards for the city of Amarack,” the guard stated dryly.
“Why do they always sing?” Sam asked the guard.
Laughing at Sam for a moment, the guard replied with, “Because they are trying to annoy us, since we told them that they could no longer eat the trespassers, but every once and awhile we let them eat one of the prisons inmates.”
Sam's eyes widened with this statement, and promptly shut his mouth.
“You may enter the city now, but make sure that you are indoors at all times after night fall,” the guard told them. Castor was about to ask why, but the guard stepped aside, and allowed them into the city of Amarack.
