The song ended and a fast paced one began to play and Austin and I let go of each other. I guess I should go see what Max wants, he probably thinks he can make up with me again, ha that will never happen.
“Austin, come over here!” A guy’s voice yells in the distance.
I nod my head in their direction saying, “Go on, I’m going to go see what Max wanted.”
He nods rubbing my arm gently as he murmured, “Be careful.”
I simply nod again and walk over to Kasey because Max is bound to be close, the alcohol is over here. I find Kasey sitting in a lawn chair sipping on a beer and I take a seat in the open chair next to her.
“You did that on purpose didn’t you?” I questioned not even looking at her.
I watched her smirk out of the corner of my eye and she respond, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Oh bull shit, I know you played two slow songs in a row on purpose.” I pointed out turning to face her.
She chuckled, “Maybe I did, but you seemed to be having a good time.”
“So you and Austin seem to be doing great now that I’m gone.” Max announces his presence to us and Kasey sends him a hard glare, which he ignores.
“How many times do I have to tell you this? Austin and I are just friends; it shouldn’t really matter anyway because I don’t want you here. Considering that you knocking me out the other day I don’t want to see you at all or talk to you ever again. Why are you here? Do you think you can come here to give me some bullshit excuse that you’re sorry for what you did? No, this isn’t going to work like that; not this time Max.” I ranted standing from my seat as I spoke to get in his face to make my point clear; I was beyond done with him.
“Fine, don’t think I won’t get Darby to ruin your chances with him because I will.” He threatened, but Darby walked right past him and sat down in the chair next to mine.
“Whatever Max, I’m good. I had my fun with you and it sucked, so I won’t be doing you any favors. Now leave this girl alone before I call in some reinforcements because you know I can.” Darby tells him with a smirk, but a true promise in her gray eyes.
Max made an irritated noise and stormed off muttering about finding some other girl, yea right. I turned to Darby to ask, “What made you want to help me like that?”
She shrugged lightly saying, “I like you I guess and Max pissed me off thinking just because we got together a few times that I would do his dirty work. There’s not really that much to explain.”
“But you seemed like you hated me before!” I cried feeling so confused, no wonder Max didn’t stay with her for long.
She shook her head no and explained, “It was all just a big misunderstanding. At first I thought I wanted Max when I met you and I thought you would be a challenge. Then I found out I was wrong about both of those things. Then my slutty side took over when I saw you with Austin, but I can clearly tell that he wants someone else and nobody is going to get in his way, no flings for him I guess.”
That made my stomach turn with jealousy, Stacey still owned his heart of course. I smiled in understanding, I guess Darby wasn’t all that bad after all, very slutty and a bit insane, but she was nicer than I had originally thought. Wow I don’t want to imagine what Alan would do if he saw this, me getting along with his ex-girlfriend. Kasey, Darby, and I slid into a comfortable conversation and you couldn’t even tell that earlier I had been extremely pissed off at Darby.
“So speaking of what Max said earlier, what are you and Austin to each other?” Darby questions, resting her chin in the palm of her hand.
“We’re just friends.”
