Chapter 1
"This numbers are wrong! You have to photocopy these sheets again! And Mr. Stone should be here by now!" I shouted at the top of my lungs.
Three of my workers look pale and completely intimidated by me. I smirked to myself not showing it. I loved to have an effect on people; I loved the feeling of superiority.
The three left the room in a hurry. Each of them went their separate ways and hopefully they will be doing their work well. I didn't want to have to yell once again.
I got lucky and they did their work well after my shouting. Mr. Stone arrived to my office and after our tiring meeting; I was done for the day.
I drove all the way to my house. I liked to drive, it was one of the things I always do myself. In no time, I put my car to stop in front of my big modern looking apartment complex. Once I pulled the door open I am met by the silence.
Hanging my coat on the closet by the door, I made my way to the kitchen where I found Marine, my chef. She is the best chef I have ever had and one of the most efficient workers I have under my wing.
She had my food ready, never once I had to wait when she cooked. She knew exactly when I'll get home and she was always ready by then. As soon as she served my food, she was dismissed leaving me alone on my big apartment.
I turned on the TV while I eat the delicious chicken dish Marine prepared for me. I entertained myself with the best moments of this weekend's football match all the way from England. I don't miss my home country that much. I was pretty content with my life here in New York.
As always, I left my dirty dishes inside the dishwasher and left to my office. I worked on some papers here and there. Being a CEO is a big responsibility. It is not only that you depend of your job; thousands of families depended on it too. It is a huge responsibility.
Around 1 am I turned off my laptop and jumped to bed. I felt my muscles relax and soon I drifted off to sleep.
When my alarm sounds the very next day I jump off the bed. I pull a pair of basketball shorts over my boxers and go to my gym.
As every morning, I exercise for 40 minutes and then I get a well-deserved shower. When I am finish I go to the kitchen and make breakfast. That was another of the things I do myself.
My breakfast consisted on muesli, a banana and coffee with two sugars. That gave me enough energy for the day.
As every day, I drove to the office. Everyone greets me on the way but I didn't greet back. I pulled into my office and just a few seconds later my secretary Joanna appeared through the doors.
"Mr. Payne, Mr. Tomlinson called this morning. Also Mr. Horan would like to talk with you about some finances." She announced.
"Okay. When I can make that work?" I ask.
"Today is impossible. You have to be at the hospital in 30 minutes for the charity." She remembered it to me.
"Oh god! That! I totally forgot." I ran my hand up and down my face. "Okay, tell Horan that I'll try to meet up after lunch with him. I'll call Louis now and then we go."
"Of course, Mr. Payne." She said before exciting my office.
I pulled my phone and ran Louis number. After a few rings he answers.
"What's up fucker?" He greets me.
"You tell me asshole." I smile. "Everything alright?"
"Yeah mate everything's fine. I just called to let you know that you need to be free next Saturday." He said.
"Why so? Are we going out?" I ask.
"No." He laughed. "Mate I proposed to Eleanor last night and she said yes." He told me and I knew he was smiling on the other end.
"Wow! Congratulations mate!" I say.
I was truly happy for him even though I couldn't understand why he would want to compromise this way with anyone. I guess not all of us are made for marriage. I was definitely not made for that crap.
"Yeah, yeah. Now on Saturday we are throwing an engagement party. You have to come." He tells me.
"I wouldn't miss it mate." I say.
"Good." He says.
We hang out not long after that. I make Joanna write the event on my agenda and then I made my way to my car. In 10 minutes I was in front of the hospital. I was met by several cameras and I waved to them knowing this will give me great publicity.
I entered the building and was met by a man on his 50s. He introduced himself as Doctor Stevens and he was in fact the person in charge of the whole hospital.
He guided me to the children area where I was going to give a speech. I did this every year. I always donate a huge quantity of money to a charity. This year I was giving it to the children hospital in town.
Of course press was here and I will have to pose for photos with sick kids. It wasn't nice to see those innocent creatures that way but knowing that some of my money was going to make them feel better makes me somehow happy. And I am not usually happy.
"Mr. Payne will like to share a few words with you." Doctor Stevens introduce me.
Everybody clapped and I gave them a little smile before putting the microphone to my mouth.
"Yes, thank you doctor Stevens." I smiled at him. "I'm Liam Payne and I am the CEO of Payne Inc. I don't expect any of you to know that but well that is my presentation for you."
I hated public speeches and I have worked so hard for years for it to get better. I think it is better now. I guess practice helps a lot.
"I'm here to spend a morning with you. I want to know what goes on in between these walls. I want to help you as much as I can and seeing a smile from you will make my day." I say.
I recited the rest of my speech hoping I sounded real to the kids. It was sad to see the bad condition some of them where. Kids deserve happiness and to be able to play not be sick on a hospital.
Once my speech is finished, doctor Stevens introduce me to some of the staff of the hospital. I shake hands and try to be as polite as possible.
"Violet, darling, could you show Mr. Payne around? I have a heart operation in 20 minutes." Doctor Stevens asked to a blonde girl.
"Yeah, sure." She answered.
I looked at her and frowned. She is cute, yes, but it was weird. She has long blonde hair pulled into a side braid, her eyes are green, her lips fine and freckles cover her cheeks and nose. Her smile gave her brightness. She wasn't wearing any makeup which took me by surprise.
I looked down to her clothes and she was wearing a kind of floral dress with a white cardigan along with a ballet flats. Her nails were chipped and remains of a pinkish color could be detected.
She looked cute and innocent. I hated that look on an adult. She must be my age, maybe a few years younger. However she dressed like a teenager. You need to dress your age if you want to be taken seriously.
"Hi! My name is Violet Lane." She introduced herself extending her hand for me to shock.
"Liam Payne." I shook her hand confidently.
