Molly's POV (Seven Years Old)
I run into the forest and sit in the grass, tears staining my cheeks. I can't believe what they say. I'm not going to believe that my father is dead. I may be young, but I'm not stupid. I know what they mean by "gone." Bringing my knees to my chest, I let out a sob and squeeze my eyes shut.
It takes me hours to calm down. My eyes are still closed.
I feel a hand on my shoulder and jump a little, opening my eyes. I look up and see crystallized hazel eyes staring into my own. He looks about my age. The thing that catches my eye quickly is his wolf ears. This doesn't surprise me much, seeing as most of the people in my village, including myself, have these ears and a wolf form, but I have rarely seen anyone with such dark gray fur.
The boy moves his hand. "Are you okay?" he asks in a gentle voice. I shrug and straighten my legs. "Do you need to get home?" he continues. I nod after a moment. He holds out a hand and I grab it, pulling myself to a standing position. After that, he leads me towards my home.
When we arrive, he looks at me. "What's your name?" he asks. "I'm Alex."
"I'm Molly," I whisper. "Thank you for taking me home."
"You're welcome," he replies, and he turns on his heel and into the streets of the village. I sigh and gaze at my door before stepping forward and opening it.
My mother and my older brother, Cole, are sitting at the table and look up when they hear me come in. They rush to me, requesting that I tell them what happened. I explain the scenario to them calmly and relief spreads through their faces. They return to what they need to do and I rush up to my room. After a while, I sob myself to sleep.
