Molly's POV
After my watch, I wasn't able to fall asleep again. I lied awake for hours. Finally, as the sky fades from black to a misty gray, I sit up, giving up on rest. I focus, and mere seconds later, I hear my wings unfolding from my back. I give them a quick flutter before soaring into the air. It isn't long before I land on a nearby tree, partially dependent on my wings as I perch on one of the thin upper branches. I carefully rub my mother's flower charm on my bracelet, gazing out at the horizon. After a while, the sun begins to rise, a flaming sphere of bright orange against a pink, orange, yellow, and deep blue sky. The clouds attain a bright orange tint around the edges. I smile softly. I haven't seen beauty like this in a while. Something tells me I won't be able to sit and see things like this for a while, either.
I hear rustling from behind me, and I turn straight around, ignoring the sunrise I was watching a moment ago. Panic fills me when I see one green eye, paired with a red one. A head of black hair. Tan skin. Lips curved into a wicked smirk.
"What do you want, Zack?" I demand, my voice wavering.
"To simply complete the task I was given," he snarls. Memories of my past possession pass through my mind, and I do the first thing my mind tells me to.
I let out a blood-curdling shriek.
He winces, and I take the opportunity to give a hard flap of my wings. I shoot into the air, only to direct myself straight down, into our camp. Why didn't I bring my bow and arrows?!
I swoop into camp and start sprinting the second my feet hit the ground, not bothering to retract my wings. I make my way to my sleeping spot and grab my bow and sheath of special arrows.
Alex sits up and rubs his eyes with a yawn. He must hear me, because he comments on my heavy breathing and quick, noisy movements.
"What's up?" he mumbles sleepily. He opens his eyes halfway, and they snap open the rest of the way when he sees my rushing and my expression. "Molly?"
"Zack," is all I can choke out. His eyes go even wider, and he nods, throwing his blanket off of himself. He grabs his diamond blade and his infinity pouch, and I grab my own bag.
I hear Zack's chuckles from behind me and whip around, pulling an arrow into the bowstring. I aim it at his heart.
"I will shoot," I growl.
"Go ahead," he purrs. "Kill me, and have the entire Demon population after all of your friends. They all die, and the demons torture your lonely self for the rest of your life."
My hands tremble, and almost every impulse inside of me tells me to shoot. But I can't. I won't let my friends die.
"Take me and my friends to my father," I growl slowly. "Let him go. Then, I'll let you take my power. Just don't lay a finger on my friends or my dad."
He grins evilly. "That can be arranged."
He begins to speak in a foreign language, and I'm somehow able to realize that he's trying to make it impossible for me to look away. He's going to take over me before I get to see my dad.
I try to move, but I can't.
"Molly!" Alex shouts. He sprints in front of me, and I can move again. But he can't.
"Alex!" I shriek. "Don't!"
After Zack has casted the spell, he smirks. "Not an angel, but he'll do any day," he purrs.
"Alex," I whisper. "Snap out of it."
"I want you to get everyone up and run," Alex murmurs. "Now."
"But-"
"Now! I will be fine!"
Hot tears sting my eyes, and I reluctantly turn and start waking everyone up. Zack is already casting another spell, so he can't focus on me.
I wake Nikki up first. I explain what is happening, and she immediately helps me wake everyone up.
"Let's go," Nikki says hurriedly after everyone else is awake.
"W-what about Alex?" I whimper.
"We need to leave him behind," she barks.
"B-but..." A tear rolls down my cheek. "I c-can't leave him!" I turn on my heel and start to run right to the boys, ignoring Nikki, who calls out to me. I slam into Zack as hard as I can, sending him toppling to the ground.
He still murmurs the spell, and I know that he must be in some kind of trance where the only thing he can do is complete the spell. I pin him down, my elbows on his shoulders and my knees digging into his stomach. I reach back and pull an arrow from my sheath, instantly yanking it in front of me and holding the tip to his neck. If he dies, so be it. I'll protect my friends.
"Molly, stop!" Alex shouts from his spot in the grass. His voice is strained, and I turn to see him trying to move- his body keeps jerking, but he can't do too much to break the spell.
"Alex, I'm not leaving without you!" I yell. "Okay?! I've been your friend for too long for you to just slip through my fingers like that! Don't argue!" After a moment, a choked sob escapes me. "Y-you're not getting a-away that easily!"
He goes silent, his eyes filled with sadness.
"I will break that spell," I mutter through my clenched teeth. "I promise that I will find a way."
"Get out of here," he pleads. "Zack's gonna come to any moment now. I-I can't-"
"Alex!" I cry. "Stop! I'm not going without you!"
I feel weight under my shins, and my legs are suddenly flung into the air. I lose my balance and fall onto Zack. The same weight appears under my stomach, and I realize it's his feet just before I'm launched into the air.
"Molly!" Alex screams. I land on the ground near him, and the impact knocks the wind out of me. I gasp and cough, trembling. My bones seem to shake inside of my skin.
"You're so stubborn!" Zack growls, and I hear his footsteps approaching. I sit up and pull another arrow from my sheath, balancing it in the bowstring. My breathing grows unsteady, and I point the arrow at his forehead.
"Let Alex go," I mutter.
"No," Alex grunts. "Stop."
"Let him go," I repeat. "Let them all go. And I'll stay. You can take me."
Zack shrugs and pulls a potion from inside of his jacket. He tosses it over, and the second it hits Alex, he drops to his knees next to me. He coughs and breathes heavily as he looks over at me.
"Go," I mutter.
"No."
My gaze hardens.
"Just go. I'll be fine, Alex. I promise."
