Jihyun's POV
I could still feel my flushed face once I sat down at the dining room table. Soon enough everyone gathered around and dinner was served. There was chatting and laughter all around the table. I sometimes sat there lost because they would start speaking Chinese. Other than that, it was a fun filled night.
Dessert was served and the room was quiet.
"So Jihyun-ssi, tell us about yourself," I looked up with wide eyes at Luhan's grandmother, who just spoke perfect Korean.
"Y-you know Korean?" I asked with confusion written all over my face.
She chuckled, "Of course sweetheart, what made you think I didn't?" she smiled.
"Lu-Luhan said...." my voice then faded as realization sunk in. My head whipped towards Luhan who was sitting on my left side. He suddenly burst into laughter.
Everyone looked at us like we were crazy.
"What the heck Luhan?" I slapped his leg, but he just continued to laugh. "Aish! I hate you."
"I'm sorry baby," he said in between laughs. "I'm serious. I'm sorry Jihyun-ah. Forgive me?"
I ignored him and continued eating.
"What's going on Jihyun?" Mrs. Lu asked curiously.
I sighed and began telling everyone the conversation we had in the car. Once I was finished, everyone turned to look at the guilty Luhan beside me.
"Yah! How can you do that Luhan? No wonder she looked so scared whenever she saw me looking at her," his grandma scolded him.
"Just ignore my dumb brother unnie. He's so immature," Jia whispered.
"I'm sorry baby, forgive this stupid boy," he pouted.
"Ew, don't do that please."
"Only if you forgive me," he sang and I just nodded.
"So Jihyun, you were going to tell us about yourself." his grandpa cut in.
"Uhm... there's not much to know really. I attend the same school as Luhan, I'm 18 years old. That's basically it."
"What about your family? What does your father and mother do?" Mr. Lu asked. I froze on the spot. I saw everyone was anticipating my answer. I gulped and I felt a hand take hold of mine and gently squeeze it. I turned to Luhan as he gave an encouraging smile. I glanced around the table once more and saw faces of those I could trust.
"Well my father is the owner and CEO of DaeSan Corporation, but he's been overseas for the past three years because business in the States are that well. And I'm an only child because...."
I felt another gentle squeeze.
No One's POV
"Because my mother died after giving birth to me. Her maiden name was Song Yumi," the mood in the room went down. Everyone pitied her for never having a full loving family.
"My father never remarried, but he would tell me stories about her every night when I was a kid," Jihyun smiled as she remembered some of the stories. "My uncle said she was a sweetheart always putting others before her and my father said she was a lovely person."
"She really was," Mrs. Lu said softly. All eyes turned to her.
Jihyun looked at the tears brimming in Mrs. Lu's eyes.
"You have your mother's eyes Jihyun," she smiled. Tears started to form in Jihyun's eyes when she said that.
"Y-you knew my mother?" she whispered.
Mrs. Lu nodded frantically as she sobbed, "She was my best friend." Mr. Lu was at his wife's side in an instant, comforting her. She remembered the night when she received a call from Jihyun's father as he told her what happened.
"Jia, take Kibum up to his room and both of you stay there," Mr. Lu said and the two left without a word.
"You knew my mother," Jihyun couldn't help but smiled in glee. She finally found someone who actually knew her mother. "Please Mrs. Lu, you have to tell me about her," she said once everything calmed down.
"Come, I'll show you some photos of us from back in the day," she took Jihyun's hand and led her to the living room. "Here, look threw it all."
Jihyun began flipping through the photo album. Photo after photo of her mother and Mrs. Lu smiling together. But a photo caught her eye immediately. It was Mrs. Lu, her father and mother together in high school.
"You knew my father as well?"
"Yes. Your mom and I were best friends since the first grade. We were inseparable. Then our last year in high school came along and your father transferred to our school. They kicked it off immediately. In only a few months they were madly in love with one another. Always spending time 24/7, but she never forgot about me. College came around, we all went to the same school. They were still together and then he proposed to her during graduation. Right on stage in front of thousands of people. A two years after they got married. The had to push back the wedding because your father had to learn how to run the company. We both got married the same year and we pregnant about the same time.
"I remembered that night I got a phone call from your father. I remembered how hurt he sounded when I tried to tell me what happened. He was crying and crying saying that the world was so cruel to take such a wonderful person's life. I couldn't be there to comfort him because I was in China, but I hated him so much afterward. I remembered seeing him at her funeral without you. I asked where you were and he told me at the orphanage. I saw so much hatred in his eyes. I slapped him across the face and started yelling at him for being so stupid to just leave such an innocent life in a terrible place. The next day I went to the orphanage ready to adopt you, but they told me the father took you back and I never saw him after that."
Mrs. Lu turned to look at Jihyun, who had tears cascading down her face. She immediately hugged her.
"Your father loves you Jihyun, that's why he took you back," she whispered.
"I know he does."
After a few more minutes they finally released one another.
"It's late sweetie, why don't you stay the night."
"Oh no, I couldn't. That's too much."
"Please stay," Mrs. Lu caressed her cheek in a loving manner that Jihyun couldn't refuse.
"Okay. Thank you for everything Mrs. Lu."
"Just call me auntie, neh?" Jihyun just nodded.
