Scorpius

I was sitting by myself at breakfast. Three kids sat across from me. I normally thought this would've been a kind gesture but I was unsure when I saw the faces of James Potter, Rose Weasley, and Albus Potter. They're so lucky. They have each other and parents that care for them. Not a father like mine who's eyes are forever haunted by the war and a mother who will never talk about her family, insisting, 'You are my family, Scorp!' It was almost Christmas and I wasn't sure if I wanted to go back to see them. And they are certainly not being haunted by their dead grandfather.

People who hear their last names immediately respect them. Not like me. My last name is Malfoy. Another famous last name but not in the way you'd want it to be.

"Hey Malfoy," says Albus Potter. He has black hair and green eyes. He looks a lot like his father, I observe.

"Um... hey," I say without looking away from the food I'd served myself. I hadn't eaten yet, I just stared at it. Was it true? Can I not escape my grandfather?

"I said that we've heard about you on the train but that's not true," he starts. "We've heard a lot about the name Malfoy, not Scorpius."

"I know," I reply. "And please don't call me Malfoy. The name holds a long history of cowards, idiots, and death-eater scum." I look up half expecting Rose's icy blue eyes to stare into my soul as she hexes me.

Her blue eyes are quite startling. She also has dark red hair but no Weasley freckles. James Potter has jet black hair and bright brown eyes with a couple freckles.

Rose didn't look threatening at all when I looked at her. She looked like she was trying to read me, understand me. I don't get that look quite often.

I planned on not saying anything after that but my mouth betrayed me.

"You guys are really lucky. People don't judge you and if they do its in the way you would want them to. People don't assume you're a bad person. You have a family you can trust and that loves you. Your parents have recovered from the war and they're happy now." They didn't talk for a while. "Those are just some of the flaws in the household I grew up in."

"Scorpius--" calls Rose but I'm already gone. I'm not sure if I ever want to come back.
