I slept uneasily that night. My dad had disappeared to the local bar as he usually did and Alexa and Will stayed up for a bit working on homework. I stood in the door way of Will’s room with my arms crossed and leaned against the door frame. I knew he knew I was there.
“Hey.” I said quietly.
“Hey… Can we talk? All of us.” Will’s request sent a chill up my spine. I nodded and called Alexa. Will took a deep breath and then started to talk. “I met the other wolves today. I didn’t meet Derek though. But his pack… His pack is so kind. They were suspicious of course but it’s like they want us to join their pack. I mean of course I want to get to know everyone better first but I think I just might.” I closed my eyes as the words escaped Will’s mouth. I knew this would happen as soon as we met a good enough pack. They would join and send my father into a rage either getting himself killed our killing the other alpha.
“Will-“I started to say.
“I want to join too.” Alexa said. I shook my head at them looking very defeated.
“Guys trust me I want you to join a different pack but you don’t even know these people. And do you realize what Dad’s going to do once he finds out? Just please get to know them first.” I begged them. Will and Al nodded.
“Of course Shay.” And that was exactly what they began to do.
ONE MONTH LATER
Well the kids had done their job well. Scott, Isaac, Stiles, and Will were so close that it was like they had known each other all the their lives. Boyd was usually with his girlfriend Erica who also happened to be a wolf and part of the pack. Scott spent a lot of time with his girlfriend Allison too. Allison turned out to be a really sweet girl but she was from an ex-werewolf hunting family so she put my on edge the first few weeks we met. Lydia was Stylus’s girlfriend as well but she wasn’t a wolf. Neither was Stiles. They were just humans that had been accepted into the pack. Which does happen every once and a while. Alexa, Lydia, Alison, and Erica had grown together as well. It was nice to see Will and Al fitting in with friends. Turns out Derek had a sister as well. Her name was Cora and she was 18 turning 19 in a couple of months. She and I hung out quite a bit since neither of us was in school. She began to fill me on their pack and the situation in Beacon Hills at the moment.
Derek used to have a very weak pack. He never had the time to strengthen his bonds because he was always working on surviving and driving out the threat. The town had been peaceful all summer and up till now so they hoped the lull would last for a while. Scott had only just agreed to be part of the pack even though he had been a werewolf for some time now. He was a bit headstrong and didn’t follow Derek’s orders easily but lately everyone has been getting on. Cora thought that Will and Al and I had brought the peace. I snorted and just asked her if she had met my father. I knew that sooner or later he would find out about Will and Alex trying to join another pack. Cora also started to fill me in on relationships which she and I always loved to talk about. Hey neither of us had the chance to be real teenage girls until now so don’t judge! Scott and Allison had kind of always been together which I thought was adorable, and Stiles had been crushing on Lydia for ages. He finally asked her out and she had said yes. They have been dating ever since. Boyd and Erica were a bit of a mystery. They had been turned together and trained together so it all happened naturally for them. Isaac was single but Cora was pretty sure he had started to develop a crush on my sister which I found to be hilarious. And Cora told me stories.
I loved to hear her tell the stories. She told me of their adventures as a pack, how Derek was as an alpha and how last summer they had rebuilt the old Hale house that had burned down. Cora told me that story to. How her entire family had been trapped in the house by Allison’s crazy aunt (Who also happened to have dated Derek) and burned to death. Derek had thought that Cora had also died when really she hadn’t. Cora had thought the same of him. Derek had come back to Beacon Hills though to come after his older sister. It was a long story but the gist of it the whole pack had rebuilt the house and that was where they lived now. It was beautiful there. Cora had asked me to come over and I had. Derek had opened the door and my smile had widened and my heart sped up. I didn’t know what was wrong with me. He had smiled and let me in. I almost never saw Derek smile but Cora told me that he = was better than he had been when he first came to Beacon Hills.
Cora and I also trained together. She was surprised when I first suggested it, to help break the ice. She had agreed after some pushing. At the moment we were in the Hale training room, dancing together in the middle of the dark basement. We swung punches at each other, our legs flying up to kick our opponent’s. I loved this. I felt like my body was whole and completely under my command. Cora of course moved with the grace and ease of well a wolf. She was born into the life so she had had many years to perfect her skills. I however had only caught up quite recently. It took hours, days, and months before I finally moved like they did. I even smelled like wolf I was around them so much. How our father hadn’t noticed we had been around wolves, and that other wolves had been in our house without him noticing was beyond me. I had begun to grow suspicious. Cora’s hand came flying towards my abdomen and I snapped out of my thoughts. I stepped sideways and grabbed her wrist. I twisted her around behind her, her arm still in my tight grip.
“Surrender.” I sung out happily. Cora smiled with her fangs out.
“Never.” And my eyes widened. Cora had promised to never wolf out on me even though I had assured her I could handle it. For gods sake I had chained up my own brother and sister on the full moons! Cora crouched for a moment, gathering herself. When she sprung at me a huge shape was thrown in front of me. Derek, all wolfed out had pushed me onto the ground and stopped Cora from ripping my throat out. He stood in a defensive position, standing above me. Oh my god he’s guarding me from her, I thought to myself. He growled an alpha roar at her and she slunk away. Derek turned around and he faded back to his human form.
“Need a hand?” Derek asked with a kind of warmth in his voice. I however was pissed.
“What the hell was that for? I could have taken her!” I said angrily. I ignored his hand and pushed myself up off the ground. Derek’s eyes began to glow red again.
“Do you have a death wish? I was trying to protect you!”
“I don’t want your protection!” I screamed back at him. I knew Cora had slunk upstairs when she saw Derek. She knew not to bother him. Derek went very still. His eyes went back to hazel and stared right at me.
“You just lied to me did you know that? Or maybe you didn’t know because you’re still lying to yourself. You may not need my protection and help Shay Carter. But you want it.” And with that Derek turned and stalked away, leaving me to stare at his receding figure with a confused look on my face.
